Kya Travels
We got up very early this morning when Amy was leaving for the train station at 5am-ish and said goodbye to her. Then we went back to sleep for another hour before we had to get up ourselves. We finished packing and headed downstairs. We got some directions from the guy on reception, then headed out to the tram stop, where one of my thongs decided to break! So I chucked them in the bin and put on my shoes (such a good look, a dress with hiking shoes!), then we jumped on the tram with all the still-drunk-Saturday-night-party-people and headed into the city. From there we changed to another tram, then got on a bus out to the airport. We waited a bit for the check in desk to open, then checked in and went through security. We sat down and tried to work out what to do with the guitar, as it would cost us €100 to take on the plane if we couldn't fit it in our bag! So we ended up deciding to get rid of it and took the sticker of the troll off it for safe-keeping. Darren went back to security where there was a girl who had just said goodbye to her boyfriend and was going through security. They looked like they might be musicians, and Darren talked to her and ended up getting security to take the guitar back out and give it to her boyfriend! He was stoked! And we were glad it went to someone who might use it, rather than just going to security. After that we got a drink while we waited for the flight then went to go line up to get on the plane. In the line we saw the girl again who was also going to Porto, and she gave us a bottle of wine as a thank you for the guitar! So nice of her, but I hope it wasn't worth more than the guitar!!! So we got through the next check point where we had to prove our bags got in their size requirements by stuffing it into the little box they had (it only just fit!), then went out to board the plane. We were flying with Ryanair, and didn't know until we boarded that they don't have designated seats, it's a first in best dressed kind of thing. So we ended up sitting on opposite ends of the plane, but it was okay cos I slept most of the time anyway! We landed in Porto and got the metro into the city and walked a bit to find our hostel. Almost as soon as we landed we felt an instant change in atmosphere. It suddenly felt super cruisy and friendly, it was a good feeling, like we could relax. We didn't realize until we left that in France we were always a bit on edge, if only slightly, and didn't waste time just wandering around much, opting to work out where we're going and go straight there rather than take in the city, whereas here I think we could just wander all day and not feel uneasy or unsafe at all. I love Porto already! So we walked around, through crazy hilly streets, then down a little market street where our hostel was and went in to check in. The girl on reception was amazing! Really super outgoing and friendly, she was a champ! First things first of course, we were given a small glass of port from the area! It was sweet and delicious! What a cool idea for a hostel! Then she went through a map of the area marking out heaps and heaps of things for us to do in Porto, she really took the time to show us everything! After chatting for a while, she took us up to our room, which was awesome. The beds were still bunks, but more like cupboards! They had a little opening to get in, then a curtain to cover that, so you get total privacy from the other people in the room. Pretty cool! After we dropped off our stuff, we went out for a walk to find something for lunch, and just wandered for a bit. We passed a building which looked amazing, the entire wall was covered in blue and white mosaic, it looked cool as! Eventually we passed a place called Forno dos Clerigos that had some pretty good looking desserts in the window, so we popped our heads in for a look, and ended up sitting down there. We ordered some food and a beer each, and they brought out a little plate of snacks with the beers that they said were for free! Like a tapas plate I suppose, but they were all meat, so I left them for Darren! I got a Portuguese dish called a Francesinho, which was basically a salad sandwich covered in melted cheese, and surrounded by chips and a gravy-ish sauce. Pretty unhealthy, but it was pretty tasty! When we finished lunch, we went to pay and got charged for the 'free' tapas!! Oh well, lesson learnt! Don't accept 'free' food with your drinks! After lunch we went back to the hostel and went up for a nap. After we woke up we went downstairs to use the wifi for a bit (can't connect from our room!), then got some recommendations for where to go for dinner and headed up the street. We walked around a bit and came across a pretty cool park, full of lines of hedges, and a big lake in the middle, surrounded by these huge trees with massive trunks, the kind that store their water in the base of the trunks! It made for a very pretty park, and we walked around there for a bit and got some photos with the little sculptures of laughing guys! After that we continued to walk around the city looking at menus as we went. We stopped by a souvenir shop and had a look at stickers and had a chat to the guy who was working there, then kept wandering. It seems as though it might be a bit hard to find vegetarian food here! We weren't that hungry though and were happy just walking around, so we just kept wandering. Eventually we found ourselves outside a little bar that had live music coming from inside so we thought we'd go in and listen to that for a bit before dinner. The place was called FÉ Wine and Bar, and, obviously, it was a little wine bar. The walls of the place were very cool, they were made up of heaps of books of all different shapes and sizes and then painted green on the outside. It looked awesome. We got a drink and sat down to watch the music. It was a trio, and the singer was a Portuguese woman with an awesome voice and some cute Latin type dance moves. They were playing traditional Brazilian music, which was slightly jazzy and very fun. After a bit we decided we'd just stay, and got a bottle of wine to share. The bottle was cool, and had an awesome little description, which pretty much summed up how we felt about Portugal already! "This is the land where the time passes slowly, where the distant ocean waves beat the rhythm of the days as the sun stretches on the horizon. This is the land of warmth and light, where the senses are revived by the rivers that flow beneath a canopy of the still trees into the mists of the Atlantic. This is our land, our free land. Ruby-red in colour, a young wine, fresh with notes of red fruits, a soft body and fruity finish." Very cool. At the end of their set, the singer got two little girls up on stage with her, one was probably about 12 and the other was 5, and they sang a song together, it was the cutest thing ever! The older girl was developing a really nice voice, and the little girl was just the cutest! They had a break after that, and got some food and drinks. Darren had a quick chat to the guitarist then we chilled out for a bit. They played another set and we ended up getting another bottle of wine and a cheese plate to share instead of getting dinner! At the end of the night we had a bit of a chat to the singer, Lilian Raquel, but her English wasn't great so it wasn't a very long chat! We went up to pay our bill then discovered that their credit card machine wasn't working so Darren went to find an ATM while I chilled in the bar. He had to come back again for directions to another one, as the one he went to wasn't working, but eventually he found one and got some cash, and we paid then went back to the hostel. When we were there, Darren wasn't tired so he went back out and I went to bed. Later I found out that he ended up meeting some locals and having a massive night out with them, which was great!
