Kya Travels
After being woken by the cold multiple times throughout the night, we were woken at 5.45am by one of the busabout staff running through the camp screaming at the top of her lungs "GOOD MORNING BUSABOUT!!" She had no snooze button, so we got up, freezing and went over to the breakfast tent, where we got a roll with scrambled eggs (and sausage for the non-vegos), and a juice and hot drink. I got a coffee, which was disgusting, but so warm! I got a bit jealous seeing everyone all dressed up in their lederhosen and dirndl's, as we hadn't had time to buy anything, so we weren't dressed up! We found Amy and Jade while we were eating our breakfast, and caught up with them for a bit, before lining up with them and jumping on the bus that was going to be leaving first, and sitting up the front, so we could be first out too! Our bus' guide, AJ, was giving us a bit of information about the festival, including what we were going to do when we got there to try to get the best seats, as well as some information about how to wear the dirndls. Depending where you tie your bow, it shows whether you're single, taken, a virgin or a widow! So after the rustling of girls re-tying their bows, we pulled up at the coach parking for the festival and got off the bus. We followed AJ down the street to the festival grounds, and went straight to the Augustiner beer tent, where we got in the line. It was only about 7-7.30 at this stage, and they weren't open yet, but it was opening day, and we were assured this is the only way to get seats today! We lined up for ages, they didn't end up opening the doors until just after 9am, so we just stood out the front in line, chatting and freezing. At least it wasn't raining! Finally they started letting people in, and we very slowly got to the front. When we got to the front of the line, we showed our ID's, and I was the first of the busabout crew to get in, so I made for the empty tables in the direction AJ had said, and took a seat. As the rest of the crew filtered in, we started putting a few people on each table, so we had a whole group of tables together, and we sat and watched as the tent quite quickly filled up. At one stage Amy and Jade moved to the next table for some reason, and when we told them to come back on ours before the seats got taken, they didn't care, thinking they'd just move when someone got there. About 2 minutes after that happened, a group of 5 girls joined our table and there was no more room for them! That was kind of annoying. Because it was opening day, beers weren't being served until 12pm, after the parade had gone through and the first keg tapped by the mayor in one of the other tents, so we had about 2 and a half hours to wait, which we spent chatting and getting excited. Some people ordered food, and non alcoholic drinks, and we learnt about the ever important tipping system in the Oktoberfest tents. Apparently it is completely up to the bar maids discretion, and if they believe your table isn't tipping enough, they have the right to kick you out and let more people in! Crazy! We watched and waited as the atmosphere built up and up, and everyone watched the parade pass outside as they stood on their chairs. I got a message from a couple of friends from back home, James and Maddie, that they were here trying to meet up, and we told them to come in here, but they weren't letting anyone else in! I waved to them out the doors, and eventually they were let in. Apparently one of the waitresses actually went out there, picked them out of the line and told security they were with her! Amazing! So they got in literally just before the beers were served, and we watched as waitresses walked around the hall, holding about 10 or more steins each! AJ was on the table next to us, and had cheekily tipped the waitress €20 without making a purchase to try to be one of the first to get beers! And it worked! Their table got served way before most of us! We waited and waited, and pooled our money together to try flash it at the waitresses, and eventually one of the girls came and put 10 litres of beer on our table! We all cheered at that, and began our day of drinking! The atmosphere was amazing, we heard the band playing "Ein Prosit" about every half hour, which is the drinking song to cheers to, we saw many people standing on their chairs skulling entire steins to the whole tent either cheering or booing them, depending whether they finished it or not! It was absolutely amazing! Some people got food as well, apparently the pork knuckle is the thing to get here. (Ew...) We had a good chat with all the people on our table, and switched seats a few times between the tables so we could chat with the others, took lots of photos, ate some massive pretzels and had an awesome time. Some time in the not so late afternoon, I became very drunk. I feel ashamed to call myself a beer drinker after only managing 2 and a half maas'! (Steins) I turned into an angry-drunk-kya, and Darren lost his phone, and we fought about who-knows-what, then I for some reason decided to leave unannounced and made my way to a metro and went back to the campsite by myself. (Even though there were shuttle busses running for busabout people!) I spent a little time in the bathroom charging my phone, then went to the tent and passed out for a while. When I woke up I messaged the people with phones to say I was home ok, then slept some more. Some time that evening, Darren returned and found me in the tent, and was furious that I hadn't told anyone I was leaving. Him and Amy had been running around all over Munich trying to find me apparently, and the campsite had told them no one was in our tent, which made them worry even more. So I went with him to the bus driver who was worried about me, then to Amy's tent, then after feeling like the biggest idiot ever, went back to bed, and spent the night freezing once more.
