Kya Travels
We woke up this morning, got packed and checked out, before heading down the street to find our next hotel. The one we were staying at didn't have two nights free. We found it and went and checked in. Our room was already ready, which was awesome, so we went and dropped off our bags. Then we went across to the tourist info centre to try get some information about public transport to Bordeaux, then headed down the street to find a bike hire place. We got around the corner though, and Darren realised that he was wearing thongs still, so we went back to the hotel so he could put on some real shoes! Once we were both shoed up, we went back down to the bike hire where we got ourselves a couple of bikes, then went for a ride up to see the megalithes, the stones of Carnac! As we got out of the town we saw the first lot, paddocks full of lines of these stones, but these were quite small ones, probably only between your shins and knees in height. So we turned and rode up along the stones. As we rode they got bigger and bigger until there were stones twice our height or more, all lined up in rows. It's quite strange! When we got to these big ones we stopped for a bit of a breather. There were massive stones piled up on each other creating a bit of a tunnel type thing. That one looked great. We had a walk around the fence line - all the stones were behind this fence to stop people going in, but there were tour groups in the stones while we were there. Should have looked one of them up! We had a look at the restaurant that was across the road from there, but the prices were mental. So after a bit we got back on our bikes and kept riding along for a while. We stopped at another little place which we thought might have food, but it turned out just to be an equestrian centre! So we looked at the map and decided to keep riding into the next town rather than circling back around the stones. So we rode along the main road for a bit to a small place called La Trinité-Sur-Mer, where we followed some signs with a knife and fork on it! After a while I thought the signs were just making fun of us! But after a while (and some damn hills!) we made it to a little restaurant which turned out to be on the beach. They had little terraces looking out over the water, which were for drinks only, so we bought some drinks and sat down looking over the ocean for a while. We had shade, cold drinks and a beautiful view, so we were set for a while! Eventually we went back to the main part of the restaurant and bought some crêpes for lunch. They were very delicious, slightly crispier than the ones last night and full of yum. After lunch we got back on our bikes and rode out of town along the beach to Carnac-Plage, (plage meaning beach) which is a suburb of Carnac. It seemed like a pretty cool side of town with lots of nice little shops and cafes and the like. We stopped at the tourist information where we went in and sorted out our travel plans for tomorrow, then rode back into the main town centre of Carnac. We took our bikes back to the shop and walked back up to our hotel, where we had a well deserved break and a bit of a snooze! Around dinner time we headed out and went back to the crêperie from yesterday, Cher Marie to finally try some dessert crêpes. We both got chocolate ones, but mine came with stewed apple rings and Darren's came with ice cream. They both came with two huge piles of whipped cream, which was tasty but way more than we needed! So dessert crêpes are definitely a winner! We went back to the hotel and went to sleep for a while longer, and set the alarm for 1am when tickets to see Pearl Jam at Big Day Out next year were going on sale! We got those, then at about 2.30am we got up and went for a walk back down to the stones! We walked past the small ones at the start, and walked along them for about 20 minutes down the creepiest darkest streets! There wasn't much of a moon that night and quite a few overhanging trees which didn't help with the creepiness! We got to where the biggest stones were and went to the tunnel like stone formation we'd seen earlier, and I jumped the fence for a few photos! We had a bit of a mission getting Darren over the fence too, due to the many spikes on the top of the fence which would have hurt him a lot more than me! We found a lower section of fence though, and with a little help he got over and we went and sat on the stones for a bit. After a while we started the walk back into town, back down the dark creepy roads, and as we were walking down past the medium size stones, and running our hands along them, the air was feeling warm in some spots and cold in others, which was quite eerie. The stones date back to prehistoric times, and no one really knows who stood them up or why... Kind of like Stonehenge but much older! They're apparently put up exactly along the fault lines or plates in the earth or something similar and are believed to have a kind of static charge, or energy, that some people claim to have felt before. As we were walking back past the smallish stones we both got scared when a flock of sheep got scared by us and started running across the paddock! It was creepy because in the dark it kind of looked like they were moving stones!! Eventually we got back to the streets of Carnac and the street lights and made our way back into town and to the hotel, where we settled in for a few hours sleep before the bus in the morning!
