Kya Travels
We slept in again today before getting up for a shower and getting ready, then I put on my new jeans! I like them. They're very comfortable and nice! We organised some laundry then went downstairs to put it on. We had a cuppa and some of our lollies, then chilled out and watched a few facepainting tutorials with Karina for a bit, hung out the washing when it was done, and just did a whole lot of nothing. In the afternoon Karina got a phone call, realised she was late for an appointment, then ran out the door for that, so Darren and I just stayed and chilled out for a while longer. I got a text message from Steve, the guy from Brussels who we'd gone over for dinner with, saying he was in Gent for a few hours and was free for a beer if we were around, so we got ready and left a note for Karina before heading out to go into the city to meet him. We ran into her on the street and decided we would just do our own things for the night as she had a few things to do, and some facepainting practice she wanted to do. So we jumped on a tram into the city and walked down to a pub called 't Gouden Mandeke, which turned out to be next door to the pub we had met Hoste, Che and Bubb the night before! We went inside and found Steve with a beer, so sat down and ordered some beers we hadn't tried yet, and had a chat with Steve. He is such a legend! After a few beers and a good chat, he sneakily paid for our beers before we headed out and went to walk down to the pavilion. Steve had an awards ceremony with his work that night, and at 6:30 the program said 'surprise' at the pavilion, which is open for anyone so we headed down there together. On the way, Steve called Maria Grazia, because she wanted to talk to us if we met up! So nice! They're such a great family! I would definitely adopt them as my Belgian family! So we got to the pavilion, where it seemed we were just in time, as a line of guys wearing white singlets (in this weather! They must be freezing!) walked around through the crowd playing trumpets and saxophones, and doing circle work around people and being funny. They ended up on the stage where the conductor guy introduced them, did a small speech that I couldn't understand from his thick English accent, and the strange echo through the pavilion, then he introduced the band. So this is what was being set up last night! The band played, and they were very good, and as they played, all the strange white boxes that were suspended around the stage were being lit up in different colours to the music! It was very cool! When they finished up, the marching band guys came out again to herd all the business people to their next destination! So we said goodbye to Steve, then decided to go back to the pub from last night for a drink. We had a few beers and used some wifi for a while, then we headed out to find some chips for dinner. Filip was closed though, so we started to head to the tram, and just go to the shop by Karina's place, but went down the wrong street where we found another chip shop! So we went in there and got some delicious Belgian fries and another couple of beers. We got chatting to the couple working there, who were very friendly and full of suggestions for things to do in Gent and pubs to go to, and the guy even went as far as taking us down the road to a pub and getting a couple of beers poured for us! We weren't really planning on another beer at that stage, but it was there, so oh well!! We drank it while chatting to a guy from Holland then headed back to the tram stop (when we worked out where it was!) where we asked a couple which tram to get on, then got chatting to them for a while. We chatted to them on the tram until they got off, then continued on to Ledebergplein. We got off and were still a little hungry, so we went into a fries shop there to share some more fries. The owners were Asian, and spoke no English, so after trying to ask a few questions, the guy next to us translated a bit for us! So we got our food and sat and had a chat with him while we ate. He told us about the Gentse Feesten, which is a yearly festival in town which is apparently the best thing ever. It was hard to hear as at the start of our trip we were planning to be here for it, but ended up skipping it to spend more time in Amsterdam! After we ate, we said goodbye to him, then headed back to Karina's where I chilled out trying to catch up on a bit of my blog while Darren played some guitar for a while, then we went to bed.
