Kya Travels
We slept in a while today and woke up to Karina coming in and jumping up and down on the bed! I forgot we said she could wake us up like that! Pretty funny! So we got ready and went downstairs where we had a chat with her and Daren who was over again, then Karina decided to give me a facial while Daren and Darren cooked up some lunch. (I think I got the best deal there!) I don't think I've ever had a facial before, but it was nice and made my sore eczema-ey skin feel a lot better! The boys had made up some fries, which we had with a selection of delicious sauces from Karina's cupboard, and some leftover avocado salad from their breakfast that morning. We had a chat about Darren and Daren and decided that my Darren would be referred to as Darren #2 and the other Daren would be Daren #1, because of the amount of 'r''s in their names! So we will always know who we're talking about! The food was very nice, and the best part was that when we finished eating the boys cleaned up while Karina finished giving me a facial! When we were all done, we headed out together and walked down the street a while to get to an op shop to look for a new pair of jeans for me, to replace the pair I have had since the start of the holiday, which now have a massive ****** hole in them! I looked around, and tried on heaps of pairs trying to figure out the sizes, which was really hard, as they all seemed to be different, from different brands, and even from different countries with different sizing systems. In the end, I tried on all the jeans that I liked the look of, and found nothing, and Karina tried on a bunch of stuff she wasn't looking for and walked out with about 8 new pieces of clothing! Not fair! So we walked back home, saying goodbye to Daren at his car on the way, then we dropped off the new clothes before heading back out and catching a tram into the city. We walked down a shopping street and went into a H&M to find some jeans, where I took three pairs of jeans in three different styles into the change rooms, and came out with one that I liked straight away! That's a very strange occurrence for me! As I was lining up to pay, I remembered I wanted some leggings as well, so I grabbed a pair off the shelf quickly (no need to try on them, surely!) and paid for them and headed out. Darren met us out the front, and took us around the corner to a lolly shop he had found to make me feel better after my shopping 'ordeal'. (Yeah, I hate clothes shopping!) We filled up a bag of lollies each from the shop, then walked down through a square, where there was a guy with a stall selling local lollies! Damn! We had a chat with him about what they were. They were purple cone-shaped jelly lollies, filled with some sort of gel-ish liquidy goodness. They were called noses, or cuberdons and they looked delicious, but we didn't buy any as we already had a bag full of lollies, and the guy was a bit of a dick. But we will have to get some before we go, because apparently if you don't try noses, then you haven't really been to Gent! We walked up to what Karina told us was the best Belgian fries in Gent, where we chatted with Filip, the old man working there while he made us some delicious chips with amazing samurai sauce, and 'special' sauce, which was a mixture of mayonnaise, chili ketchup and chopped onions. It was very very good! When we finished there, we went down to a pub which was in an old kind of semi-cellar in an old brick building, and we added some more photos to our growing list of beers and chatted for a bit. Karina had to leave after a little bit as she had to go to the doctors for a medical certificate (she'd called in sick today, shhh!) so we went to head out as well and go to another pub, but on our way out the door, Darren joked with a guy on another table and they ended up inviting us over for a drink with them! So we had some more beers, and had a good chat and laugh with the guys there, Hoste, Che and Bubb, until Karina got back. We had one more round, then organised to catch up with the guys again later when they invited us to their house, then we headed off and jumped on a tram just a few stops to get to the Chilean restaurant for dinner. We had some more drinks there, and I got a yummy Spanish style tortilla and we waited a bit to watch a band that was setting up. They took so long to set up though, then sound checked half a song before getting off stage! We didn't want to wait any longer, so we headed off and walked/trammed to Hoste and Che's house. On our way there, we passed through the pavilion, which was built in the centre of town as a kind of natural amplification and performance space. There was a band playing there, and some weird but cool white box things set up to look like they were suspended in mid air. It was pretty cool, and the music was good, but we got told off for dancing silly at the front, because the sound guys couldn't test their equipment with us there apparently! They must have been sound checking for something! We got to the guys' place and went inside where a bunch of people were sitting around a table full of tea light candles and empty beer bottles and glasses. It looked quite pretty. We sat around chatting and laughing for a while, and Darren and Che started to have a little guitar session on the couch, which was cool. They ended up taking it upstairs to his bedroom (ooooohhh!) so they could both play together, so Karina and I joined the table again. At one stage, someone came in and asked "is there a Karina here?" We turned around, said yes, then Daren walked in! We hung out all together a while longer until all the drinks in the house were gone, so everyone decided it was pub time. So we walked down the street to a little place that is usually a night club, but apparently the club section was closed that night (well it is a Tuesday!) so we just sat at a table in the pub. We got some drinks, or at least Hoste bought some drinks! He came to the table holding 7 beers in one hand! Impressive! We all had a drink together, and Hoste tried to teach me to dance (and I think failed!) and many many laughs were had! Somehow at some stage we started singing a made up song called 'daddy's got a drinking problem', which Che kept making really inappropriate, but we thought it was hilarious. After a while everyone left, and it was just the four of us (us, Karina and Daren) left all of a sudden, so we decided to go across the road to another pub. This place apparently had over 200 beers on their menu, so we randomly picked out three beers (and a coke for Karina, who was done) then sat down for another chat. A Belgian girl, Julie, came over to talk to us, who is apparently a couchsurfing host as well, so we had a good chat with her, and got told about a jam session at a pub that was happening that Friday night, which sounded really cool, so we swapped details before she left, then finished our drinks before heading out. Darren got some photos with a couple of Norwegian style trolls that were in the window of the pub then we all headed down to Daren's car. We got in and Daren drove us back to Karina's, (although looking back, he probably shouldn't have...) then as we were getting near her street there was a girl walking on the street so Darren beeped Daren's horn. Then she turned into the street we were about to drive down. Awkward. It was even more awkward when Darren kept beeping it, and we had to drive really slowly behind her as the road wasn't big enough! We got to Karina's place and stopped, as the girl entered a house a few doors down. She definitely thought we were following her!! Poor thing! We said bye to Daren, then went to the kitchen where Karina cooked up some leftover soup for me and her, and added chili and cheese to it, which made it amazing. So yummy! When we finished, we said goodnight and headed up to bed.
