Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Thursday-6th April
Early start as we headed for the Cultural Village that morning. All of our trips were arranged by the "Concierge", who was very enthusiastic in assisting us as much as poss- he was lotsa help but a bit overwhelming at times.
So we set of in our wee mini van and once at the village we received a cool wee passport we took around with us. We visited 7 diff houses- each resembling the traditional accommodation of different tribes in Sarawak, and at each one, we had our passport stamped and learnt some stuff about each tribe.
Nearly stood on a viper on a wooden bridge and there were some gorgeous cats in the longhouses- so clean compared to those in KK, and they had REAL tails!!
Once back at the hotel, Gran had a little rest while mum and I went for a stroll down the waterfront together. The local row boats were quite amusing- they had huge advertisements on them like, "Sunsilk" and "Ice Tea", with a little dude with double oars at the front. I began to realize that Kuching is a bit more open minded than Sabah, in relation to unmarried couples. We saw many couples, freely holding hands (still no public kissing) but still, girls and boys walking alone together is not the done thing in Sabah.
That evening, the 3 of us followed LP's advice and went to a western restaurant called "JUNK". Turned out to be ab fab. It was upstairs from a bar area and had really atmospheric candlelit lighting, gorgeous tribal décor and an over all chilled out ambiance. We sat watching the waiters bringing out other customer's orders and our jaws kept getting lower and lower. I can't explain the size of the portions. Was mental- the plates were too big for some waiters to carry!! There was none of this carrying 6 plates at once malarkey- one plate was huuuuuge. And the portions were manic- we saw a Seafood platter come out- and the decoration on the plate was so impressive. The combo was served in a mahusive clam shell and sprawled over this massive plate. We were like- oooo. Even after witnessing other tables struggle intensely with their portions, we still went full out with 2 starters and a main each. Hilariously huge. But of course I managed my yummy pasta!
The restaurant was quite close to the hotel, so we strolled back via the waterfront and I got a sly tribal henna tattoo on my lower back and some cool Indian henna on my hand. Felt a bit dube cos the girl doing the henna was Muslim, and I wasn't sure if it was suitable to ask her to do my lower back, but she seemed alright about it.
