No one else checked into my dorm yesterday so there was just me in there, I have to say it felt a bit lonely and too quiet!! I am so used to hearing other people that it was strange! I must be getting used to hostel life!
It was even colder today, by 10am it was minus 12 already! Its hard to comprehend how cold it feels! But my thick coat, hat, thermal tights, socks and gloves definitely help! I may not look the best but at least I stay warm!!
I decided to visit a modern art museum today, I dont pretend to be an expert in art at all but I do like contemporary art so I do like to go to galleries when I can. This one is called MO Museum and I really enjoyed it. The building itself was amazing, all sharp corners and glass and it only opened in 2018. I didnt know any of the artists as they were all Lithuanian but I really enjoyed some of the paintings and sculptures - some of them were quite thought provoking. I spent a good couple of hours in there and then walked around the gardens too that had sculptures in.
The museum was a bit out of the centre so I walked back and it was so so cold! Plus it goes dark so early which makes it worse! I stopped for a couple of beers and then went to the cat cafe as I had booked a table for 6pm.
I have been to a cat cafe before in Brussells and loved it - even though there has been one open in Leeds for a while now, I havent actually been (I have spent time staring at the cats through the window though!)
This one has 15 cats that live there and there are cat trees, toys and beds all over the cafe. You wash your hands and wear protective shoes when you go in and they have some rules so you arent disturbing the cats when they dont want to be. I had a couple of beers and some potato cakes - which are a regional dish, a bit like hash browns flattened out but really tasty and light, served with cottage cheese and soured cream.
The cats were so cute! True to form, being cats, a lot of them were just asleep or minding their own business but you can see straight away which ones were the lively ones as they were playing and running around! Made me miss my little two pals back home so much!!!
As I headed back to the main street for a couple of drinks, I noticed a homeless guy. It was snowing and so so cold, I felt awful for him so went to get my purse out to get some money for him. I couldnt really see so went into this doorway that was lit up to get some light. What I didnt realise was, that the doorway was a church and I was stood right next to the box where you put money in and light a candle.......Next minute this woman appeared and is then hugging me and giving me a candle and I am in the church where there is a service going on! It all happened so fast!! I tried to explain I only spoke English so didnt understand what was being said and couldnt stay, but she just said, stay as long as you need, everyone is welcome! Blimey! I stayed for a few minutes, completely bewildered as to what had happened, then slid out! I dont half get myself in some situations!! (I still gave the guy some money, and tried to tell him to go in the church to get warm but I dont think he understood me!)
I then went for a few gins in the cocktail bars and chatted to a guy from new york who worked in one of them, he went travelling around Europe 5 years ago and never went home! He was only meant to be away for 3 months! Finished off the night with a falafel which was amazing!! ha ha
Had the dorm to myself again, so slept so well!
