So after a nice shower, I packed my bag ready to head for the bus station. When I say pack, you dont really fully unpack in a hostel as there isnt much room for you to put anything. Thats why I much prefer a bottom bunk as not only does it save having to get up and down all the time, but you can put your bag under the bed and just seem to have much more space. Every hostel I have been in has a locker but they tend to be quite small so I just put my cards, money, passport and laptop in them.
The walk to the bus station took about 20 mins which was quite hard work in the snow! I managed it without falling though! (still covered in bruises from my fall the other night!!)
I had booked a ticket on lux express again, the same bus I got from Tallinn and it takes about 4 1/2 hours. I bought a sandwich for the journey and got settled down and watched a film then listened to some music and ended up dropping off as before I knew it, we were in Vilnius!
I had emailed the hostel asking the best way to get to their from the bus station and they said it was a 30 min walk, there was a bus for 1 euro or you can get an uber for 3 euros. As it was snowing heavy, I decided to get an uber and it arrived within a minute!
The hostel I am staying at is really nice, it is right on the edge of the old town and is really friendly and cozy. It was around 5pm when I checked in - got a bottom bunk again - woo woo! My room is a 6 bed dorm but there was only one other person in - a spanish guy who was asleep and asked me to 'mute the light'! Think he was a bit hungover and grumpy!!
I unpacked what I will need that night in case I cant put the light on again! and headed out to explore. I had a few places in mind I wanted to go to but decided to just meander around the old town and took some pics of the lovely buildings. Its such a smart and pretty place! Not quite like Tallinn but really nice. The old and new buildings really go well together and as its snowing, it really looks pretty. There is a main kind of high street but even that is pretty with cobbled streets next to posh shops such as Armani and Burberry. I think I am really going to like it here!
I went for a couple of drinks in a few pubs, tried a nice beer called Kozel which is a dark beer and also had a couple of cherry beers. The first thing I have noticed is how friendly everyone is, I didnt really feel that in Riga. Here I have even managed to get a smile out of a couple of people in the street!
I went to a mexican little takeaway and had a veggie burritto - the girl behind the counter was lovely and said she loved speaking english! It was really yummy if not a bit messy!
I then passed a pub called Portobello and saw a guinness sign! Yeah! You enter the pub through an old red telephone box and apparantly the locals love it! But alas, the guinness was off so I had another Kozel instead!
As it feels quite an upmarket place, there are a lot of cocktail lbars which look really warm and cozy so I headed for one and had a few gin and tonics. In all honesty, I am not a massive lover of cocktails, I am always disapointed in them! Plus a night on cocktails is not really in my budget! The gins were a bit more pricey than the beers obviously but not too bad at 5euros for a double. The bar girl was lovely and came and chatted to me for ages, it was quite quiet in the bar with it being a Monday night. She asked if I wanted to some recomendations for places to go and asked what kind of bars I liked and she sat with me and wrote me two lists - one of bars to visit and one of restaurants, including some veggie ones as I said I didnt eat meat. I thought that was so sweet and friendly! I had found some places when I had researched but none of them were the ones she said so I am so glad she took the time to help me!
She asked if she could make me a cocktail and so I said I would have a daquiri for my last drink - blimey I am glad I only had one, it blew my socks off! It was actually really good though!
I wandered back to the hostel in the snow, only about a 10 min walk and headed to bed around 2am. An ace first night in Lithuania!!
