After waking up pretty early, I laid in bed scrolling through twitter etc to catch up on what is happening back home. Doesnt look like I am missing much. Quite a few European people I have met have mentioned Brexit to me and they all seem quite upset about it - in fact I think we are a bit of a laughing stock! I am really proud to tell them I voted for remain! I dont think this trip will have been so easy to navigate if we were out of the EU!
The spanish guy must have left early as his bunk is empty now but a new guy is in the bunk opposite me, I think he is Australian. (Hi Jordan!!)
I went to the supermarket and bought some bits to make a quick lunch. The hostel only has a tiny kitchen but it has a hob and microwave, I made a quick dish of fried potatoes with onions, chilli and egg with some cheese. It was really nice actually! I spent a couple of hours writing some blog posts in the common room. The couple that run the hostel are so friendly, always stopping for a chat and making big pots of coffee that you can help yourself too. Its really chilled out and homely.
I went back up to my room and got chatting to my room mate, he is australian and he is ace! So enthusastic and intelligent, he is only 19 but is so well travelled. It was lovely chatting to him!
I decided to try some of the bars that the barmaid had given me and one was called Piano Man - and they sold guinness! Yey! Ended up chatting to a dutch guy sat at the bar for a while and had a few drinks then my room mate was walking past and saw me so came in for a pint too. Its ace just chatting to people from so different backgrounds and cultures, I love it! Oh and then a guy brought a dog into the bar and I got way too excited! I thought that was only an english thing! ha ha
I then went to a bar that the girl had recommended called Alchemikas which is a tiny cocktail bar that only seats 30 people, mainly around the bar! The staff are so friendly and found me a seat and took my coat for me. Their menu is huge - around 120 cocktails!! I saw that they had my favorite gin, Gin Mare, so I opted for that and he made it really well - even burning the rosemary he added to get more flavour!
I got talking to a couple next to me, Vida from Lithuania and her boyfriend, Dave from Bristol! They both lived in Bristol and met at work. They were so sweet and friendly, we chatted for ages about festivals, camping and music. It was ace.
Then the girl from the bar the night before came in with her boyfriend and came straight over to say hello to me! She was really pleased that I had gone there based on her recommendation! We chatted for a bit as she was off to Rome for the weekend the next day and she said its one of her favourite cities! Everyone is so friendly here!
I got chatting to the bar man too, they have only been open a couple of years but seem to be doing well. The staff were constantly practicing making new drinks and take it really seriously but arent pretencious in the slightest. I asked what his favorite cocktail was that he drinks and he said a martini. When I said I had never really had one from what I can remember, he said he must make me one! He talked me through all the ingredients and why they worked etc and it was ace. But bloody hell it was strong! When I got the bill, he said the cocktail was on the house too! Bless him!
I called for another drink on the way home but ended up in the worse karaoke bar ever (thinking about it, they do love a karaoke bar in Eastern Europe!) It reminded me of Brannigans - rough and ready but full of Russians singing russian songs!
I had one quick drink then headed home, finding a falafel on my way! When I got in the room, Jordan was still awake and he had snuck some 'tinnies' in (there is no alcohol allowed in the hostel) so we shared a couple of beers and sat up talking for ages - he never stops talking! He was telling me about the kangaroo culling they are having to do in Australia and they kill them by shooting them from a helicopter!!
I think we chatted until about 5am, he is an ace guy, so easy to chat to despite being so young!
