Well the Cyclone that was heading for Airlie beach didn't hit us thankfully! It was all pretty scary stuff, our windows in our rooms were all taped up just incase and we were told we may have to evacuate in the middle of the night!!
We managed to get out to the Whitsundays on Tuesday we had to go on a different boat to what we had originally booked as the next availablity for the one we was on was the end of the month! So we booked on to a boat called SV Whitehaven. We had a really good time and did lots of snorkelling, which was amazing! I've never seen so many pretty fish, we got fed really well on the boat as well which I was surprised at. We went to Whitehaven beach which meant to be the 3rd best beach in the world, it wasn't! Well it probably is but when we were there the weather wasn't very nice and because of the Cyclone there was all rubbish washed up on the shore and it wasn't very nice, I can see the potential though! I'd like to go back there for the day just to see it in its full glory!
We had to sleep on the boat which was very strange, the first night we started sleeping on the deck but it started raining so we went in our rooms, the next day the sea was really choppy after breakfast and I started to feel sick! I was eventually sea sick!! I've never been sea sick before! I think it was just because i'd only just eating and the sea was so rough!
I wasn't really blown away by the Whitsundays! I think it may have been because the weather wasn't great and the after effects of the Cyclone!
On Friday we left Airlie Beach, me and Kelly were going to home Hill to work but then Kelly spoke to the lady Shelly and she said we may not get work for 7-10 days so we said that we'd just carry on up the coast with the other girls. We got on the Oz Experience bus and asked the driver to book our hostel for Magnetic Island which was the next stop but he could only get us one night because there was a full moon party that night and all the other hostels were fully booked so we decided that it was fate and that we should go to Shellys and give it a go at getting work. So we got the driver to drop us off at Home Hill. When we got here we were like what are we doing here! The hostel was deserted and we had to wait around for ages to get checked in! This funny looking guy who looks like worsel gummage checked us in, our room is really nice just 2 other people in it, swedish guys who are really nice. Everyone was out at work when we got there then in the evening when everyone was back we got talking to a few people and all they seemed to do was smoke weed and drink! We were slightly worried! As we got to know people though it was ok!
We finally saw Shelly on Sunday night and we didn't expect to be put on the work list for at least a week but she put the list up on Sunday night and I was on it to work on Monday leaving the hostel at 5.20am!! OH MY GOD!! Kelly was put on standby, if anyone was to be ill or didn't get up she'd be able to work and then about 10.30 a guy called Pierre knocked on our door and asked Kelly to work instead of him as he was ill. So monday morning we both got up to experience our first day at work and what an experience it was! We got to the farm which was in a place called Gumlu about 20 mintues away and got straight in to work! We had to plant Melon cuttings! we were given a tray of 200 plants and had to go down the rows to plant them! There were 10 of us altogether. It was really hard work and really hot and I thought I was going to collapse! I got through the day though, don't ask how! We did 6 1/4 hours of planting! The farmer gave us a beer at the end though which was good although I don't drink it!
We were both really tired when we got back and had a little sleep then had some dinner and an early night! I was due to work again the next day! One of the guys Dan had worked for the farmer before and said he'd finished by 12 the last time he worked there so I was hoping for an easy day! Did I get it no way! We left the hostel at 6.30am and started work at 7, it was more planting and today there was only 6 of us we had 20 rows to plant and it took about 1,000 plants a row! We worked for 8 hours!! I was nearly dead by the time I got back to the hostel! and I was really stiff and could just about walk I felt like an old lady!
I worked again on Wednesday for the same farmer and again did 8 hours! It actually wasn't that bad though. After the first day I thought to myself what am I doing here then as the days when on I got used to it and its not actually that bad! I have 88 days to do to get my second year visa! so only 85 to go! I have a day off today which is very well deserved, Kelly is working today which is a pain, it seems that we won't get to work on the same days or together!
We found out there is a swimming pool here so I might head over there in a bit!
I'm planning on staying here for 7-8 weeks! Hopefully I will last that long. x
