The Royal Botanical Gardens were set up by early British settlers fed up with the monotony of the bush looking for reminders of a nice English country garden. There are probably a few more palm trees and tropical ferns than you'd ordinarily get in the Cotswolds, though it provides a peaceful morning's walk. The nearby ANZAC shrine fittingly looks down upon the whole city and is visible at all points along Swanston Street.
The MCG, Melbourne's home of cricket and Aussie Rules lies in the Sports & Entertainment precinct, alongside the Rod Laver Arena, the Olympic arena, and a few other stadiums. It has the highest concentration of sports stadiums anywhere in the world. I'm delighted to hear my guide for the day is Bruce (as any of you familiar with the drinking game will understand); I manage to get a "G'day Bruce" and "Cheers Bruce" in, but with none of the fun in between. Despite being in his 70s he sets a quick pace around the mammoth 100,000 seater stadium. He shows us the pitch, the media room, the plush members' enclosure, and the really quite smelly changing rooms, amongst other things.
At MoVida, a trendy tapas bar in town, tables are booked up for 8 weeks in advance. We do nonetheless manage to squeeze onto a tiny bar table before the many plates of tapas start coming out. I can understand the advance booking because it's excellent food, including scallops with potato & jambon foam, peppers stuffed with crab and potato, and South Australian prawns and pork belly. Muy bueno!
