Heading out of the city today to see some of Victoria's other sights.
The Great Ocean Road along the south coast traces the very bottom edge of the Australian continent. With nothing but ocean until Antarctica the surf is up and we pull over to see some Australian surfing, although we appear to be watching Victoria's Worst Surfers. I get some excellent video of people falling over a lot before moving on. The road is windy and hilly so progress is quite slow and, being midwinter, the days are short so the race is on to see the sights before sundown at 5pm.
Lunch is at Lorne, a small seaside town with lots of Fish 'n' Chip shops. There's a good selection of fish, although unfortunately they're sold out of flake (shark) which is the standard fish in Victoria - infinitely cooler than cod.
The Twelve Apostles are a series of (twelve) sea stacks. We reach them literally minutes before sunset, after being in a high speed pursuit of other cars involved in a similar race against the sun. The Apostles are certainly well worth the rush, with the chalk stacks being beaten by the surf in the pink evening light.
A motel owner in Halls Gap (our destination in The Grampians) advises that "you won't find a room here tonight...there's a 70th birthday in town"...it's obviously a very happening town. Although the next motel we phone has rooms available.
Still in a race, this time against restaurant closing time, kangaroos bouncing across the road are slowing progress. When we do arrive, the motel keeper is very concerned that we may miss dinner, but still doesn't manage to pick her word per minute rate much above ten.
