Up for a bit of canoeing this morning in Katherine Gorge. A tree full of flying foxes is making a hell of a racket making it difficult to hear the safety talk: something about crocodiles and getting mowed down by cruise boats. Its very peaceful on the river, no particular current to fight against and lots of secluded beaches to park at (except for those which are designated as crocodile breeding sites) below the steep gorge walls. My rowing technique is not the best and as I get out of the canoe you would have thought I had been swimming.
We stop for some proper swimming at Edith Falls, a pair of waterfalls with their respective plunge pools making another paradise swimming spot.
There are some leftovers from lunch, so what better way to get rid of them than feed to the camels: they slurp up all the bread and apple cores we have. They seem very affectionate creatures, although there is a nationwide cull planned. As well as bread and apple cores, this introduced species unfortunately also takes quite a fancy to lots of local flora.
On the final stretch into Darwin, Jordan, our driver, plays a few Australian numbers through his iPod. Quite soon the whole bus is singing along complete with actions to 'House Beneath the Gum Trees', 'We Got Some Bloody Good Drinkers In The Northern Territory' and 'Come To Australia...You Might Accidentally Get Killed.'
Darwin is massively more cosmopolitan than anywhere else in the Northern Territory, and I can now understand why our guide was shouting "we're going to Darwin" every hour like clockwork for the whole journey. The town is currently booming due to all the mining going on in the region. There are lots of different foods on offer and plenty of bars in the CBD (which is a term I've noted that Australians use more than should be permitted outside of a Geography GCSE class).
