Just another crazy day in Central America!
Went for breakfast at "Flayva's" down the street. We were there for dinner last night too! Awesome food at excellent prices. The owner is a character AND there's free wifi! I had a humungous breakfast burrito with fruit and coffee. Wayne had the "Belizean breakfast"...eggs, beans, fruit, sausage and fry jacks (just google it I cannot explain their yumminess properly!)And coffee and we paid less than $10 us! That's what I'm talking about!!!
We met our guide David at 9am and headed off for the mountain pine ridge in an ancient isuzu with yet another set of questionable door handles. He's an excellent guide and we had lots of fun!
For those of you familiar with Algonquin park and Muskoka, the pine ridge area is similar with granite outcrops and waterfalls galore...just imagine scatterings of palm trees and substitute small lizards for chipmunks darting up trees. Beautiful area! We had fun swimming in the pools around the falls and got a good work out hiking. We even saw a blue morpho butterfy!!!!
We got back to San Ig late in the afternoon and decided to check out the Cahal Pech (place of the tics) ruins at the edge of town on our own. It's a small site that was home to Mayan nobility from 1000bc to 800ad. That's really, really old ;).
We were by ourselves most of the time which was really nice. It's a beautiful shady site. We even saw a pair of wild tapirs (Belize national animal...didn't get a pic!).
Amazing to be able to wander into rooms, through passages and explore every part of the site. It's one of those places that just gives you...not goosebumps so much, more like you can feel a hum in your blood. A powerful place. So many things have happened around those walls since they were built thousands of years ago.
Tomorrow we're headed to Guatemala for the day to visit the huge ruins at Tikal. Can't wait!
