We hopped on the Belize City water taxi (speedboat) at 10:30 yesterday morning to begin our travel to San Ignacio, near the Guatemalan border. A quick stop on Caye Caulker for more passengers and we arrived in Belize City about 11:45. $60bz for 2
Grabbed a taxi (OLD car just like most here...driver had to do all sorts of tricks to just get doors to open and close ;)) and had a short ride to the main bus terminal. $10bz
Wish I'd had time to take pictures at the bus terminal, but we has just enough time to hop on the Novelos bus leaving for San Ig. The bus terminal had huge hand written schedules up on the wall, how accurate they are is anyone's guess. In Belize a schedule or appointment is considered a rough estimation of when an event will occur. Public transportation in Belize is by old retired US school buses, painted a variety of colours and some in better shape than others. They are called "chicken busses". Along with people, bags & produce you may also count small livestock among the passengers. Our ride to San Ignacio took just under 3 hours, with frequent stops along the way to pick up and drop off passengers. We were beyond capacity for the last half hour with all seats occupied by 2 or 3 people and the aisle full of standing passengers. $14bz for 2
We checked into the Casa Blanca Hotel and got our tours for the next three days finalized. Mountain Pine Ridge today, Tikal ruins in Guatemala tomorrow and the ATM cave on Saturday. We are going to be busy!
