O MY GOD! Back to cilvilation!
We have just arrived in Uyuni after three days of nothing but dust and sand - isolated is an understatement!
Wednesday we arrived at one of the Chile/Bolivia border crossing which is more than 5000 metres above sea level, which meant exercise equals gasping for breath! We transfered all of our stuff into the cramped Land Cruisers - our transportation for the next few days. The Scenery was amazing and exactly what we imagined, a big open space of dirt, dust and sand with mountains all around us. The sky was blue and the sun was boiling but the air was pretty cold because of the altitude. We saw some amazing sites, steaming geysers, lagoons and flamingos. That night our accomodatioon was two rooms with 8 singles beds in each, one toilet with no flush and no running water. At least the food was good though, we had a cook with us on our journey.
Yesterday was more of the same, loads more dust and dirt and more lagoons. We also saw the stone tree (a big rock that looks like a tree through natural errosion), the mountain of 7 colours and a volcano. The accomation last night was slightly better as we had running water but electricity only between 6:30 and 9pm. Had an early night anyway as we got up at 4:30 this morning!
After our early rise this morning we drove half an hour to the salt flats to watch the sun rise over them, what an experience. Blinding white salt floor with a spectacular orange sky. We had breakfast out the back of the truck at 7am after wondering what would of been an island before the lakes dried out. The island was covered in cactuses, one which was 900 years old. We took so0me comedy photos on the salt flats because there it´s hard to distinguish perspective. Our next stop was the Hotel de Sal (hotel made of salt blocks and all the interior was made of salt). After this we went to the salt processing factory and then onto a train graveyard. We arrived at our hotel at 2pm, it was lovely to have a proper bedroom! Tonight we are going to have an early night, there is a pizza place in our hotel and we heard it does a spicy llama pizza - might have to give it a go! We are leaving at 11am tomorrow to head to Potosi, the highest town in the world (we think).
Ta Ta for now.
Love us x x x
