Day 3 of the Feejee Experience started off with me and Li somehow feeling even more hungover than the night before. Li told me that he was lying in the grounds of the resort on the grass at 4am being sick, nice work. Cam turned up at breakfast having only stopped drinking on the beach 5 mins earlier having gone to bed…madman. Having had my camera in my pocket on the beach again I had got sand in the lens AGAIN, tit. Sat at the back of the bus trying to suck the sand out and tapping on the screen, the combination of which and the accompanying sounds drew some disturbed glances from the front of the bus where they couldn't see what I was doing!
The stop of the day was at a local village to meet the Chief of the village, have some kava with him and make some traditional jewellery. It was funny when the Chief came out of his house with a Feejee Ex t-shirt on and his wife had a Feejee Ex sarong on, not corporate at all. Anyway this time the kava was stronger but nicer, my mouth went very numb. The girls made Fijian bracelets out of cane and I bought one to add to my ever-burgeoning south sea jewellery collection.
Next was a visit to the local primary school which was undoubtedly the highlight of the Feejee Ex for me. The children were so happy, polite and welcoming. Couldn't be a bigger contrast than with kids back home. They danced, sung, introduced themselves and chatted to us, and wanted to be in every photo. It was a very uplifting experience.
Having done the cultural part of the day it was time for some silliness with the bamboo bilibili rafting! Well it started off very tranquil but we all soon got pushed into the river and a mud bank fight soon ensued to the tune of much laughter, Cam was particularly lethal with his giant hands which could scoop up huge clumps of mud and cause a considerable sting. We would have our revenge tomorrow.
We checked into the Volivoli Beach Resort which was dead but we were greeted with a Fijian history lesson on the beach as the sun set by Soni, who was like a Fijian yoda, who I thought was fascinating and I learnt a lot. The evening's entertainment consisted of a quiz, in which me and Dani were in a team. Obviously with my excellent (some would say sad) general knowledge we won and got a free drink each.
Despite being the groups last night together and being billed as a big one by midnight there was only me and Dani left. By the way it had been pick on Kev night, with Dani & Julie hiding from me when I went to the loo making me think I had lost the plot, and Dani dropping a toad on my chest when I wasn't expecting it at all, not amused. There were toads everywhere after dark and they would haunt me for the rest of Fiji.
