Kevin and Joannie on tour
Today was a transit day. Senora Fox passed as we were having breakfast but she didn't stay.
We decided to travel via Puerto Varas today to pick up shopping for the next four nights. It has reliable supermarkets, whereas Ensenada only has village stores and we didn't know what Hornopiren has. It's also New Year's Eve tomorrow and then New Year'sDay and everything tends to shut, even restaurants.
The journey to Puerto Varas was uneventful and we stocked up at Lider. Ensenada is about a 30 minute drive from there. We were staying at Cabana La Sauce (pronounced Sow-say) but though there were lots of Cabanas advertised on the road we couldn't find it. We asked at the petrol station and then at the Carabineros. The police officer was very helpful but we couldn't understand a vehicle he was describing. It turned out it was the Flintstone's car!
With the help of a restaurant worker we found our cabana. It wasn't quite what was advertised. Behind a well kept Mini-supermarket was a large house, mainly abandoned and behind it, a small cabin that look like it used to be the servants quarters. It was freshly renovated and spotlessly clean but really only one large room with beds, a kitchenette and bathroom. The view of the volcano that Booking.com sported turned out to be from the neighbouring restaurant. The back yard was a meter deep in volcanic ash, mostlikely from the eruption of Calbuco earlier this year.

Still it was only for one night. We moved the dining table from the house to the parking lot which gave us magnificent views of Volcan Osorno on a sunny evening. The woman who worked in the supermarket and who had given us the key did not but an eyelid when she retired to her quarters in the big house. It looks like she lives in one room at the back. (Many homes in Chilean tourist areas are holiday homes and have caretaker staff who live is small cabins at the rear.)
We had meant to visit some local waterfalls but the fact it took over an hour to find the cabana meant we called it a day.
