Kevin and Joannie on tour
Today has been mostly about picking up the truck that we will be using for the rest of the holiday. After breakfast Victor ran us to the airport where we had elected to collect the car. We did this because we didn't fancy driving through central Santiago. However when we got to the airport, there wasn't a counter for Chilean Rent-A-Car and the information woman told us to go to arrivals. There we saw a man brandishing a sign with our names. He explained he would take us to Providencia in the centre of town to collect the car. Best laid plans of mice and Joan.
After much paperwork we finally drove the car out onto the ringroad and found our way back to Calera. Beyond tat, we really didn't have too much of a plan so we headed down roads lined with vineyards, courgettes, corn and fruit. Eventually we reached Isla de Maipo but there was no sign of the famous river.
We stopped at a supermercado to buy some food for a picnic and the woman on the checkout struck up a conversation. She had previously lived in Luxembourg and sad life in Europe was very ordered. She thought life in Chile was chaotic. She shooed away another customer to continue our conversation. kindly she also gave us directions to the river.
We parked on a scrubby car park on the banks of the Maipo and ate lunch before driving back to Casa Ibarra.
For dinner we went to a restaurant by bus. It seems there is a flat fare however far you go. Buses are frequent and cheap compared with home. We rucked up at Lucas y Tomas. It was a huge pristine restaurant with a big screen playing 1990's Latin American music. There were a few interesting veggie dishes on the menu, but some of them will have involved a stock base and we don't know how to ask about stock yet!
Both of us plumped for the easy option, Pizza. It was absolutely stuffed with veggies but not exactly hot. Despite being a huge place, full of staff we were the only people to dine there. The chef came and talked to us. He was very proud of his Pizza A La Pobre, which has steak, chips, fried onions and an egg on it. We suggested a guacamole and chip pizza would be good and he headed off into the kitchen to make it. We had to persuade the waiter to stop him!
