Friday 18th September - Marseilles to Arles
Last night before we went out for dinner we watched the sun go down which was lovely and after having a lovely dinner out at a local restaurant we got back to the apartment and there was a concert at the fort going on. This was for a yachting regatta that was being held in Marseilles and we had watched the yachts sail into the harbour earlier on. There was also one of the Volvo round the world boats tied up to the jetty also. At the end of the concert there was a fireworks display and we had front row seats for viewing this.
We were up early and had breakfast and then packed our bags ready for departure. We tidied the apartment and then went and had a cup of coffee at the local boulangerie and it wasn't too bad.
When we got back to the apartment there was a note on our door from the owners who had just this moment go back for Moscow - 20 hours late.
We had a chat with them and they ordered us a taxi to take us to Gare St Charles. On something that I had read was the fact that Gare St Charles was a 10 minute walk from the Quai?? I roughly knew which direction the Gare was in but 15 minutes by taxi and we were there at a cost of €16.50.
We entered the Rental Car office and all the rental car agencies were there and guess what the Avis office had a long queue. What seemed to be an argument was going on with a group of 5 persons booking a car.
We waited for 1 hour before we finished all of the paperwork and were given the keys to an Opel in row 21. Trundling our bags over the roughest driveway we got to row 20 and there was an Opel so I pressed the button to unlock the car and the Skoda in row 21 unlocked.
We packed the boot with our bags and worked out how the GPS worked and away we went. Arles next stop.
