I flew to Denmark to meet a friend. Denmark is where Princess Mary, an Australian woman who met a prince and married him in real life, lives! It also the country where Vikings come from. They lived here thousands of years ago, but not anymore.
Copenhagen is the capital city. It has many old buildings and castles and churches to look at. It is a very easy city to cycle around with special cycling lanes on both sides of the road. Cyclists, like the cars have to stay on the right hand side!
The Little Mermaid is a famous statue here. It was built because the author, Hans Christian Anderson , is Danish.
He was born in another town, Odense. Here you can see his tiny birthplace house and a museum describing his life and how he got his ideas for fairytales. It was very interesting.
I also visited Aarhus a town built near "peat bogs" . Peat was used for fuel to keep people warm and fed. Due to the bacteria in it, people buried in peat have their bodies preserved. Humans only discovered this about 80 years ago when bodies were found. At first they did not realise that the bodies had been buried thousands of years ago. They are now cared for in museums so scientists can learn about how people lived in the past.
Then I travelled west to Ribe. This is an ancient town that still looks like it did one thousand years ago. It has cobblestones streets, small houses with crooked lines because they didn't have the tools to help back then and a lot of evidence of how the Vikings lived. It was amazing to see the history.
To travel, I took the train. These places are actually on three different islands so the train (or cars or bicycles) have to cross over bridges to get to other side. It is only a small country so it is only a couple of hours to get anywhere .
