Thursday 30/08/12 Art Day
After stumbling upon all the Art galleries yesterday on the way back from The Bay Bridge (not the Golden Gate Bridge) today we were going to see some exhibitions. The David Shrigley exhibition Brain Activity at YBCA (Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts) and the Cindy Sherman Retrospective at SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art). After eating breakfast and stealing bagels for lunch we spent the morning on wifi. Then after a picnic lunch in the YBCA gardens we went to see David Shrigley, it was humorous and fun and we enjoyed ourselves. I liked the hallway if all his drawings and writing the best.
After the show we walked around the city a bit more. So many homeless people it was so sad to see. There were poor homeless people everywhere and I was just amazed that this hadn't been something I had known. I hoped it was something that was being recognised by community leaders. So much begging it was hard to give change to everyone or anyone.
We retreated guiltily to Westfields as we didn't have to be at the Cindy Sherman exhibition till after 5pm to get the half price tkts. I bought a pair of leopard print vans. Cheeky!
Then we found a bar that had a happy hour we could just about afford in San Fran (now recognised as the most expensive city in USA and beating NY). A good drink with a great helpful bar man in a place not to far from the gallery John Collins.
The Cindy Sherman show was good and the rest of the gallery had some good pieces. In her latest work portraying American women we thought it was pretty accurate as we had met most of these women in LA!
We decided to head back to the hostel as it was pretty late. Last night we had attempted to go to a reggae night in
Mission (a trendy happening district). We got the subway to Mission 16th, where a homeless woman helped us work out the ticket machine for change. Once at Mission 16th we took the wrong turning and ended up in a s*** hole scary place and took shelter in a hipster bar for a drink and get our bearings! I didn't like the area I felt totes nerves so we got back on the subway back to hostel ends. After talking to the gallery lady she let us know we had taken a wrong turn but weren't to far off the loveliest street with the best bars. Oh well safety first.
