J: In the morning I woke and as usual I had to wake the girls up, apparently I wake up too early as they were all moaning, I left them to wake up gradually, while I had a strip wash in the public toilet, at least I was the clean one. Once they were all revived with tea we made a visit to Mossman Gorge, it was a natural fresh water spring in the mountain which made a beautiful river. It was FREEZING cold but we couldn't resist a quick dip in it, even though all the other tourists just watched us while standing on the side, maybe they paid attention to the warning signs…..?!
S: When James says early he means 6am! Mossman Gorge was beautiful, what James also forgot to tell you, that it was a 2km hike to the Gorge, you could pay for a bus, but he wasn't prepared to do that. Least Marika knows what he is like and had come prepared for these things - poor Georgie. We then drove to the Daintree River, where we went on a Crocodile cruise, and let's just say the tour guide was a huge scaremonger. Apparently Crocs can run on land at 80km/hr and the image that came to my mind was a croc wearing sunglasses holding a pina-colada in its hands lol. We saw a couple of crocs, including babies and poor Marika looked like she was ready to have a heart attack. But we did land safely and all in one piece. We crossed the river, and headed to Mount Alexander look out, where the Daintree rainforest meets the sea.
J: The drive was incredibly beautiful through the Rainforest; I didn't even know Australia had rainforests before getting here! We stopped at Jindalba Boardwalk, which winds through the rainforest, we had our eyes peeled for the Crocs running through the rainforest but only saw 2 Mantis's on a tree. Randomly 1 was Russian and 1 was Chinese, they were having a little fight and the sneaky Russian kept flanking the Chinese Mantis and kicking him in the bum…… I gave this amazing commentary of the fight to the girls and they just thought I was nuts. We had been reading in the Lonely Planet book the Cassowary Birds were native in that area of Australia, and there were less than 1000 in the wild and it's very rare to see them. Then we saw 2 of them in the bush! They were just standing looking at each other. They are a huge bird, about 1.5m tall with the body shape of an ostrich. They have been known to kill people and are classed as dangerous, but it was cool seeing the 2 of them and we all felt very lucky. We then found Marrdja Botanical Board Walk which went through all the swamps and Mangroves, I thought it was really beautiful and informative with lots of little information boards on the walk. Did you know that some trees have snorkels from their roots to stop them drowning, that was my fact for the day. The girls found walking over all the water scary as they were still worked up from the scare mongering croc tour.
S: On the way to find our spot for the night we saw 2 more Cassowaries, so in total we have seen 0.4% of the Cassowary population. I thought these things were meant to be hard to spot; well it impressed us four anyway. So we found a car park just next to the beach and parked up for the night. It was already dark, and we decided on a pee area outside one side of the van, there's got to be some rules. This was fine until Georgie was slightly up hill of Marika, you can imagine the direction things flow lol. Later we played cards, Georgie isn't a natural card player and it made for good laughs over some beers. When we woke the next morning, we found the toilets just about 150m away, a little embarrassing. We went for a walk along the beach, it was stunning, and we had to admire Marika's whiteness (We only mocked her a little bit) I've never seen James browner than Marika before. Georgie had a job interview in Cape Trib, so we visited the hostel and whilst Georgie was having her interview we borrowed the facilities to have a shower for free.
