We decided not to go to Guatemala in the end as it seems pretty dangerous at the moment. Instead, we decided to book a microbus to go to Alegria, a nice pueblo east of San Salvador. We went there and stopped at Berlin on the way where we ate pupusas for breakfast. We visited the church and village square. After that, we carried on towards Alegria, a lovely village high up in the mountains. We decided to stay but all accomodation options were fully booked. We met a local policeman who was very helpful and found us a cheap double room in the local school. Just outside Alegria, we visited La Laguna de Alegria, a lake which sits in an old crater of a volcano, the site was fantastic, the blue/green water. We went around the lake and then back to the village to have lunch. I had spaghetti with loroco to make a change. Then, we came back to the town square where there was a lot of animation and stayed there. We also visited the local church. All villages are so colourful and peaceful here. Everyone is polite saying Buenas to engage the conversation. We bought some nice coffee mugs made in local pottery. A village well worth visiting...!
