Last day in Shanghai done. We decided to give the water town a miss and just hang about the city again. We planned to check out the French Concession and then Nanjing Road.
After we awoke and dressed we stepped outside and noticed it was fairly rainy. Not great weather for wandering around outside, that's for sure, but we had no back up plans and couldn't think of anything else we wanted to do so we stuck to the original plan.
First stop was the street vendor from yesterday where we bought potato burritos again and also a spring onion type pastry pancake. Both were pretty delicious. I also bought an apple, you know, to be healthy.
We walked towards the metro and ate our foods. We caught the train to a place called Xujiahua Street which is supposed to be the area where the French Concession is. It started to rain a bit heavier and I wanted coffee so we made our way into a Starbucks and had a drink.
By the time we had finished the rain had eased a bit so we wandered out into a park which seemed to be fairly French-like. It was a lovely park and we strolled through spotting and trying to make friends with the local cats. One mangy looking ginger tomcat was particularly friendly and gave us some rubs and let us have some pats. He even walked along with us for a while. Unfortunately we didn't have anything to give him to eat so he soon lost interest.
When we had finished looking through the park we stopped at a bookstore where we had a quick browse. I almost bought a few books but held off.
By then it was around lunch time so we went to a shopping centre near the metro station and shared a pizza. It was okay pizza but a little bit greasy. It was interesting because they gave you a plastic glove to wear whilst eating the pizza so your hand wouldn't get grubby. I had a carrot and orange juice too, to keep the healthy streak going.
It was early afternoon when we finished lunch and Nanjing Road (a busy shopping street) is supposedly better to visit at night so that you can see all the neon lights. We didn't have any other plans though so we headed there anyway. Shannon had a taiyaki on the way to the subway as well, which he seemed well pleased about.
When we got to the Nanjing Road East the rain was still hanging about and kind of got worse the longer we were out. We walked down the road for quite some time but it was all big shops and department stores and we had been under the impression it was going to be market like so we weren't overly interested. When it started to rain a bit more we decided to bail and head back to the hostel.
It was 4pm-ish when we got back and I started to watch The Wedding Singer on the Surface. At 5:30pm we went down to the restaurant below the hostel for an early dinner and to try and beat the crowds. We ordered some noodles (soup version for me and stir-fried for Shannon), edamame (which was listed in the menu as "bad edamame" for some reason) and some pork and cabbage dumplings. The servings that came out were absolutely massive. My bowl of noodle soup was never ending! We did our best to eat what we could but I'm sure my bowl was still half full when we left.
Not wanting to go back out into the rain we decided to call it quits. We finished watching the movie and then continued to bum about in the room.
Tomorrow we go to Hangzhou which I'm looking forward to because I think it's going to be smaller and more traditional. Shanghai has been fun but the weather has definitely gotten the better of us. I'm not sure what more there is to do here either. Most of the webpages we have looked at seem to list all of the things we have done as the things to do, so yeah. Anyway, we both agreed that we probably wouldn't come back again unless it was for a reason. I think Shanghai is one of those cities that is better if you know it well or have someone to show you the ropes.
