Today we leave China to fly to Hong Kong. Shannon had a bit of a rough sleep last night because he is feeling a bit flu-y so we slept in until 10am and then took our time to get ready. At close to 11:30 we headed downstairs with our bags and asked for them to be locked away in the luggage hold area. We decided to have breakfast and a pot of tea at the hostel and it was probably one of the better breakfasts we have had in China. I had muesli with yoghurt and eggs and toast and a bit of apple whilst Shannon had bacon and sausage and eggs and toast. We sat and enjoyed our leisurely breakfast and topped up our teapot a few times.
At around 1pm we headed out for a walk. We went down the market street and then into the nearby shopping centre. We browsed around at a few things before having a coffee at Starbucks. By then it was around 2:10pm so we decided to head back to the hostel to get our things.
Our plane to Hong Kong wasn't until 8:15pm but the bus into the airport was going to take an hour so we decided we'd rather be safe than sorry. We collected our things and made the walk up to the metro where we went one stop to get to the main station. We found a sign that said airport shuttle so we started to follow it. We ended up walking maybe 500m down the road and got to the end of the bus lines but couldn't see one that seemed to be going to the airport. We doubled back to the station and had another look around at the signs and decided it was definitely pointing the way we had gone. So off we went again this time following a few other people who had luggage. A bit further past where we had turned around before we found the shuttle bus! Hooray! We were both pretty relieved and quickly bought tickets and hopped onto the waiting bus.
After about 15mins we departed the terminal and were on the road to the airport. It took an hour to get there and once we arrived we were fairly early and weren't able to check our bags in yet. We had a bit of a feed and some tea at an expensive restaurant and relaxed for a bit whilst we waited.
Before the check in gate opened we had an announcement that our flight was delayed but it was only by 20mins which wasn't that bad. We got our bags checked in and then ourselves through security before having a seat in the departure lounge to wait for boarding.
Our plane ended up being delayed by another 40mins so we were an hour behind schedule. The flight itself was enjoyable and we received dinner which was actually really delicious and I would fly with Hong Kong Airlines again for sure.
When we arrived in Hong Kong the airport seemed really nice and clean so we were optimistic about the city in general. We did the necessary airport things and then went out to find the bus terminal. We had decent instructions from the hostel on how to get there by night bus so we found the right bus stop and waited to board the bus. The bus was comfortable and had space for luggage storage. The instructions said we had to get off at the 13th stop which was Nathan Street/ but after more than 13 stops and that one not coming up, we did start to get a bit worried. But we stuck it out and before long our stop came up.
It was a quick walk around to our hostel and once we found the building we had to go up to the 14th floor to get our key. Unfortunately the code they had given us to open the door didn't work! It was around 1am by this point and we were started to panic. Fortunately there was a doorbell and when we rang it a lady answered and pointed us to our key. We then had to go down to the 10th floor to get to our room. When we got there we couldn't get the door to open! Shannon went back up and tried to ask for help again and I waited with the bags. When he came back down we'd both figured out we had been doing it wrong and once we'd sorted that out we were able to get into our room.
The hostel is actually spread across several different floors and our apartment has maybe seven other rooms plus a common shower and toilet area and a small lounge. Our room is incredibly small. It's about two metres by 2.5 metres and basically just fits the bunk beds and one bag open at a time. Haha! But it'll be fine for five nights and will at least prevent us from spending all our time in our room!
