Today we started with a city tour with Emmy a beautiful young local tour guide. She really knew what she was talking about and gave us great insight into Hungarian history. The bus drives us around Pest side where we went to Heroes square , we drove past St Stephans Cathedral and parliament house, then we crossed over to Buda where we went up to the castle and another cathedral. Back to the city centre for free time. We decided to go to Terror house, a museum dedicated to the people that lost their lives during the occupation of Hungary by Nazi Germany from 1938 to 1945 and the Russian occupation from 1945 to 1991. As we knew no Hungarian history it was all a lot to take in. Many atrocities were committed tortures and executions. The museum is really well done and has videos of people telling their stories. Hungary lost 72% of their country after WWI. The language is unique and isn't similar to any other languages. This makes it very difficult for people to learn and for Hungarians to learn other languages. After the House of terror we had some lunch and walked through the shopping streets had a quick drink before heading off for dinner on a boat down the Danube. The Danube splits Buda and Pest so we got to see the beautiful buildings on both sides at night. The boys wore these stupid hats that they got today which the rest of the bus found very funny. One thing I forgot to mention is when we were driving along the Danube on the bus today Emmie pointed out all these shoes on the edge of the river. They were in fact a memorial to the Jews who were taken down to the river and shot or pushed in and shot. The Hungarians were really treated poorly and some of these stories are heartbreaking. Anyway they have a beautiful city and another one I would love to come back to.
