Today we stopped off in Auschwitz on the way to Prague. I was really scared of this because I knew it would be very full on, but in the end I'm very glad I did it. It's so hard to comprehend the enormity of the brutal killings that were done during nazi times. This visit really shows you the reality of it and the thought of what all of those people must have gone through who went there. Over 1,100,000 people were killed there, either by starvation, illness, shot or hung for 'crimes', but most were taken straight to those horrible gas chambers. The whole idea of it is so horrible and sickening. We walked through the concentration camps and saw disturbing images of how the prisoners of concentration camps were treated, as well as huge piles of peoples belongings, including enough shoes to fill a truck, 2 tons of hair, grey with age, and a big pile of spectacles. The reality of it all really does just smack you in the face.
After Auschwitz everyone was very quiet, it had definitely dampened everyone's mood. It makes you realize how lucky we are not to have lived through anything like that. Australia is a very lucky country that's for sure.
I'm on the bus ride on the way to Prague at the moment. Going to try and get some sleep because it was an early morning bus ride today.
