So we're in Cancun, Mexico! Our first destination in Central America! Our flight from Dallas to Cancun was delayed so our arrival was later than we expected but that didn't matter because we checked into our 5 star hotel and realised we were in paradise!
We have basically spent two weeks relaxing, lying on the beach, reading books, listening to music, swimming, and drinking beers served to us without moving off our deck chairs just metres from the most beautiful turquoise coloured water we've ever seen! The water is so warm and clear that you just don't want to get out!
Our hotel is right in the centre of the Hotel Zone which is massive. You can choose to go out partying in the massive nightclubs or just chill on the beach which is mostly what we've done. We met up with Kate's Aunty Jen and Geoff who were travelling over here and went out to Coco BBBBBBBungo!!! We had an open bar bracelet and the entire place was one big show. There were dancers, acrobats and other amazing performers non stop throughout the whole night into early hours! The bars here dont close until around 7am when everyone leaves! We had a great night catching up with Jen and Geoff and at Coco Bungo.
We also went out to Senor Frogs for my birthday for dinner and drinks. It turned out that the Mexican Independance day lands on my birthday so the entire country was up for a party too! We had a great night after a great day of relaxing and swimming on the beach.
We took a day trip over to Isla Mujeres which is an island just a 30 minutes ferry trip away. It's a lot smaller and more laid back than Cancun but no less beautiful. We did a boat tour and went snorkelling, saw some dolphins, held a shark in our bare hands (just a wobigong but still cool anyway...) and checked out a man made island made out of empty coke bottles to make it float which was really cool! After the we hored a scooter and rode around checking out all the little coves and hidden gems around the island and again chilled on the beach with a couple beers in the afternoon. Then we went out for dinner and walked around the markets before heading back to Cancun.
Our only other tour was to Chichen Itza which is one of hundreds of Mayan ruins in the area. This one had a huge pyramid which during the 2 equinox's creates a shadow down the pyramid that is supposed to look like a giant snake caused by the shadows. It only happens twuice in the year and 3 days each which we were there for. Unfortunately for us you need the sun to create the shadow and the first time is rained here in 2 weeks was on this day!!! So we missed out on seeing it but it was cool to go the the ruins anyway. On the same tour we checked out a Cenote which is a giant sink hole. We had to walk underground to reach it. It was a giant and amazing cave with shining blue water and stalactites on the ceiling. We went swimming in here which was a cool experience too.
Our time here has been really good to start our trip. We are extremely relaxed, tanned and ready for our trip southward. Thankyou to my Mum and Dad for the accomodation here. It was an unreal resort with the most helpful and friendly staff we've ever had. We were sceptical about staying here for this long at first but I am so glad we did because although it is big for partying, we stayed away from it most of the time and had the best time chilling out on the stunning beaches.
Next stop.... Playa Del Carmen!!!!
