We have a little baby orphan nyala at the camp. It's become quite used to us being about, and despite being so young it is somehow managing to survive on its own. It's not looking as well as it might, as without it's mother's milk it's not getting everything it needs from eating leaves and dry grass, but it's certainly proving to be a tough little thing.
A few days ago we discovered we had a new baby antelope just outside the office door. It turned out to be a baby reedbuck, that had been left there by its mother. The mother reedbuck leaves the baby somewhere she regards as safe, sometimes for more than a day. So we had a day of wondering whether we had acquired another orphan - at which point if we had I was going to chalk "Antelope Sanctuary" on the wall, and start googling what to feed them on! Later in the evening, as it got dark the mother called from a distance and the baby reedbuck left us and went to join her. Until that morning and the discovery of the baby antelope we didn't know that there were reedbuck in the reserve!
