The water supply here is a bit erratic - there is no way of knowing from one moment to the next whether there will be any.
It's even worse for the animals, and so many of them, including Nyala, Giraffe and Zebra, have started to become regular visitors to our vehicle area where we had a stone trough with water in it, and to our big rain water tank. We've discovered that the water tank has sprung a leak (the animals discovered it first, and after the giraffes kept visiting and hanging around the tank we investigated and realised why). Despite efforts to patch up the water tank so far nothing has worked.
We've joined several lengths of hose together to fill the waterhole at the back of the camp, because so many animals were visiting it only to find it empty, and every other water supply on this side of the reserve is dry. Within minutes of the water coming out of the hose the vervet monkeys were there to inspect!
We also dragged the stone trough around to the back of the camp, as there was a concern that the animals would stand on the water pipes (which are all above water) and break them. The animals are now freaked out by the appearance of the water trough at the back, and the nyala antelope in particular run at full speed in the opposite direction as soon as they see it. We have though created THE most active bird water station ever. There are hundreds of birds there all day long, making a right old racket - actually, thinking about it that's probably not helping to keep the nyala calm!
