So, we arrived in Cusco and spent 5 days here before we started our Inca Trek. This gave us enough time to have a good wander round and see Cusco city, aswel as adjust to the altitude!!
We tried some more Preuvian food, lomo saltado! very nice, and found somwhere which does the nicest limonada! very frothy, i think its made with egg whites so it goes a bit like merignue!
I dragged jon around the markets and the shops, at all the craft works and touristy stuff!! He loved it really.
We also tried coca leaf chocolate brownies which were delicious!! Our Hostel also provided coca leaves for us so we could make coca tea, which helps with the altitude.
Then the day arrived for us to start our trek. We were picked up at 6am and travelled in a bus to our first stop, where we had breakfast, and met the group of other trekkers! from here we went straight to the first check point and began walking!!
At first walking was quite tough, the altitude does affect your breathing alot more than you would think. The first day was good, we had a few stops to see some ruins and had a chance to have a chat with our group.
We reached our first camp site after 7 hours trekking, and our tents were all ready for us. The porters carry all of the equipemnt on their backs, sometimes weighing up to 20 kilos, and they manage to run up and down the mountains! amazing. I struggled with just my backpack and sleeping bag!
First nights sleep in the tent wasn´t bad apart from the gigantic ladybird like bug which felt it needed to share my sleeping bag!! ha!
Second day was the toughest. Five hours up hill trekking, then two and a half down!! Exhausting but the scenery was amazing!! Waterfalls and snow capped mountains!
The third day we trekked through the rainforest! this trek was so lovely. We stopped for lunch (which was always delicious) and then continued for another two hours trekking. This is when my stomach altitude problems reappeared. Not good. I wont go in to details like before, but i cried, it was not good, later i laughed but at the time i cried. Ha!!
Day four! we arrive at Machu Picchu!! So amazing!! So satisfying to be there and brilliant to see! We had the perfect morning, and the sun was shinning nearly all day! Until of course we got lost coming down the waynapicchu mountain that we decided to climb. We reached the bottom of the mountain, thinking we were on the right track, to then see a sign saying it was an hour and 40 minutes back to Machu Picchu!! The majority of it UP HILL!! Safe to say the four of us were not happy bunnies! ha!!
Loved the trek. Amazing little adventure!
Next stop Copacabana, Bolivia.
