Happiness Is The Road
We got up early today as we were doing a fairly long drive to Bay of Fires. We left the camp site at about 8 and went to Woolworths to get some petrol. We then hit the road out of Launceston, a very winding road through forests and open countryside over to St Helens and the Bay of Fires. It was only about 170 kilometres but took a long time. The road had hair pin bends and hugged the hillside quite precariously in places. We just took our time and admired the amazing views and each other of course! We had decided to have breakfast on the road and stopped at a gorgeous lookout to eat. It was a fabulous view and a great breakfast only interrupted by a coach load of Japanese and a funny woman who Jay said seemed to be trying to impress me by doing push ups on a picnic bench! I was oblivious to this such was the view and the fact that I only have eyes for Jay. After brekky it was back on the curvy highway for more hair pin bends and incredible vistas. We eventually got to St Helens which luckily is nothing like its Merseyside namesake. It was a lovely little town on a bay. We went from here up to the Bay of Fires Conservation Area where there were a few camp grounds to choose from. We first tried Swimcart Beach which was lovely but all the good spots with a sea view had gone. We drove just 2 kilometres up the road to the Cosy Corner South camp. This camp was just as lovely and we found a great spot overlooking the beach and the huge crashing surf. This camp only had pit toilets for facilities but it was completely free to stay here. We had a walk to the beach which took us all of 10 seconds and clambered over the rocks and sat feet dangling watching the ocean put on a great show for us. The beaches here were beautiful, all white sand with mounds of beautiful orange tinged rocks. We then went back to the camper to chill for a while before going back to the beach for a dip in the water. The rocks on the beach formed pools of water when the tide came in creating a natural jacuzzi bath. Some loud Aussies had been sat there earlier drinking and making a right old racket. How they didn't drown is beyond us. Anyhow when they had staggered back to their caravans we took over. The water was pretty damn cold and I bet Jay that she wouldn't immerse herself in the water above her tummy. I went first and it was freezing but I managed to sit in the water. It was now Jay's go. The look on her face was a picture but she was determined not to lose the bet. The waves were crashing over us a bit and I was laughing my head off at Jay. Credit to her though she knelt down and was in the water up to and over her boobies. It was so cold I think she went into shock and she couldn't move for a bit. It was too cold to sit in there for a long time but we stood up and had fun there for ages as the waves crashed over the rocks and against us. After this we went back to the camper to dry off and have our tea. We ate to the sight and sound of the ocean. We were very happy. We saw a wallaby hop past and saw a kookaburra in the trees. The night sky tonight was awesome. It's so good away from any light pollution. This has been the best place that we've stayed up until now.
