Happiness Is The Road
We left early today with the intention of having breakfast on the road. We had hoped to find a suitable picnic area or lookout but we didn't find any. Tasmania seems lacking in rest areas and the few we did find were unwelcoming or full of murderers cars! (see MSO game from previous blog). We stopped off on the way at Hamilton to get some bread. It was all very hillbilly and local so we got our bread quickly and got out of there. The scenery on this drive was incredible as we were passing along the edge of the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park which is a huge area of wilderness taking up almost a quarter of Tasmania. We drove through to Lake St Clair National Park which took about two hours and we were completely famished. As soon as we got out of the camper the bees started to swarm around us. There were an unbelievably large amount of them. We went to have a look at the visitors centre and check out the camping areas and also have a look at the lake. It was probably a very beautiful lake but with all the ******* bees we couldn't see a lot. We went back to the camper having decided that we couldn't stand to camp here because of the bee problem. We'd already had enough of them yesterday and the thought of another day being harassed was too much to bear. At the camper we got ourselves some breakfast but whilst the door was open most of the local bee population decided to check out our little home. Jay then spent the next fifteen minutes armed with a tea towel extracting the little *******s from every nook and crevice of the camper. I'm sure that Lake St Clair is very nice but we will never know. We decided to motor on to Queenstown which we hoped would be bee free. The drive was stunning with hair pin bends on the road and absolutely magnificent scenery. We stopped at Lake Burbury and at an old gold/copper mine on the way for a break and to take photos. Some of the scenery though was ruined by all the exposed piping from hydro electric plants. Queenstown is in a wonderful location surrounded by the mountains. It was very very hot here today and humid as well. Normally the heat in Australia has been dry but in Tasmania there have been some hot and sticky days. It was only about 23 degrees today and we were sweating like pigs. Temperatures of 40 degrees when it's dry heat are more comfortable than today. We found the caravan park in Queenstown and checked in. It was nice and quiet here and much to our relief bee free. The park was quirky and tatty, just how we like it, but the amenities were the worst we've come across together. There were no locks on the shower or toilet doors, no soap and it wasn't all that clean. Also, although not the site owners fault, the place later on was full of mozzies. When we went for showers the amenities block was full of mozzies. They were literally lining up waiting for their turn to bite you. With all that exposed skin in the shower the mozzies were loving it, the filthy little gits. When we went to bed I had to spend about fifteen minutes swatting mozzies. I splattered about six of them. Bright red blood splatted out, our blood! When I thought I'd got them all we tried to sleep. With the heat and the mozzies it was an uncomfortable night.
