Happiness Is The Road
I hardly had any sleep and was knackered when I got up. I went for a walk away from the house until the Telstra internet signal appeared and rang Jay on Viber. She could just tell that I wasn't that happy but I said I'd give it a full day as it might just turn out to be okay. After breakfast one of the morning jobs was to walk round the fence to make sure there weren't any holes or damage in it. They didn't want anything getting in that shouldn't be there. I walked round with Henriette, the love birds did something else thank god! We first of all went over to the sheds to get Archie the dog. He is the managers dog and is an Australian sheep dog. He gets his exercise on the morning fence walk. Archie was one of the loveliest dogs that I have ever met, in fact Archie was better company than anybody else here. He didn't go on a lead, he just came with a small ball that he wanted you to throw for him to catch all the time. Archie was great fun. The walk round was about 4 kilometres and no damage was found to the fence. No kangaroos were spotted as they would have been sleeping somewhere hidden from sight. I had a good chat with Henriette, she was the nicest of the volunteers and I can't knock her. She came to the sanctuary as she wants to train to be a vet and wanted to learn more about different animals. After the walk we had to count the koalas. They do a survey once or twice a week to make sure that there are enough koalas still there. They are wild so they can leave if they wish a bit like me really! Should I stay or should I go? There are normally around 20 or so koalas plus joeys. We had to look up at every tree and try and spot them, some being very difficult to see as they were very high up. We spotted about 16 plus about 4 joeys so not too bad. I did this survey with Henriette and luckily not the American or the nasty one! Koalas sleep for about 20 hours every day which must be bliss, double what I get on average night over here. 10 hours isn't unusual for me now. I had always thought that koalas slept so much because they were drugged up and high on the eucalyptus leaves that they eat. This is a myth. The reason for the long sleep is because the leaves are difficult to digest and their bodies use up so much energy digesting they just zonk out. So this morning was okay. It might be alright here after all. It was certainly great being with the animals and Archie the dog was a legend. Then it was lunch which was had at the visitor centre. It was a make your own cheese and salad sandwich which was okay. Kim had said that we'd be sorting out the recycling and clearing dead wood from the koala walk later but then everyone seemed to drift away with nothing being said. The American and the nasty one were just off hand and aloof and Henriette wasn't much better when she was with them. Eventually Kim came back and I went off to sort the recycling stuff with the others. I didn't like the atmosphere and really didn't like being with these people, they just seemed to suck my energy. They were just being very cliquey. We then got some rakes and cleared all the leaves and removed the fallen branches/twigs from the koala walk. The American and the nasty one did one bit and Henriette and me did the other. No clear instructions were given, I just copied what Henriette was doing. There was one pile for big branches and one for the smaller stuff. Henriette was snapping some of the larger twigs when she put them on the pile. I did this one time and the nasty one in a really condescending way said 'you don't have to break the twigs'. I just thought **** off you stupid cow! When we'd done this I helped marshal with the American one of the koala tours for a coach full of tourists. Just had to wander round at the back and help spot the koalas for the guide. This was good but the American was annoying and you could tell he just wanted to get back to staring at the nasty one. When the coach party had gone the American just wandered off without saying anything. I didn't have a clue where anybody else was so I decided to go back to the house to read my book. I'd had enough of these parasites by now! After an hour or so Kim came over and checked I was okay. He wasn't a parasite by the way, I liked him, he was a nice guy. I just told him that I'd been abandoned and come back here. He mumbled something about going over to the visitor centre for tea later and left. I spoke to Jay again on Viber and said it was like being in the Big Brother house with a load of horrid people. My text message to her earlier had said 'HELP I'm NOT a celebrity, get me out of here!'.
I wandered over to the visitor centre for tea at about 6 and the other volunteers weren't there. I just spent the time with my laptop surfing the web. When they did appear they went straight into the kitchen without saying anything to me. I couldn't be ***** by this stage. The American came out at some point and asked me what I'd like on my pizza. I said anything, wasn't bothered. The pizza was pretty good, the company was ****. After tea though the day got good again as it was time to feed the kangaroos. Henriette was helping with the nocturnal tour so I was left with the American and the nasty one but it turned out okay as I could go and feed the outside kangaroos on my own. They went to feed the inside kangaroos together and he probably fed her something behind a tree somewhere! I got a barrow full of hay and some seed and went off to find my hungry kangaroos. They were all there waiting patiently, loads of them. More also came skipping in as they saw me arrive. I put the seed and hay down and just watched in happy wonder at all these wonderful roos having their tea. I stayed there for about 45 minutes just taking in and lapping up this wonderful scene. To have the opportunity to feed these roos was fantastic and made all the **** things that had happened today worthwhile. By now I was absolutely knackered and went back to the 'Big Brother House' for a couple of cold beers. The American and the nasty one came back a while later. I had a bit of a chat with the American. The nasty one said nothing. After 5 minutes he disappeared off with her. My beers were better company than them so I was quite okay. I went off to bed but couldn't sleep again as I had a lot going through my mind. I had a cunning plan................................... .......
