Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we left the rather wonderful and quirky Daly Waters. It had been a proper good Aussie outback experience. We hit the Stuart highway heading further north. We drove about 300 kilometres today to Katherine and onto Nitmiluk National Park, the home of Katherine Gorge. The heat hit us when we left the air conditioned cool of the camper van's cab. It was even hotter here than at Daly Waters. We had a look round the visitors centre and then went for a walk to have a look at the gorge. We are in crocodile country and there was a sign at the start of the walk stating that swimming was open but warning of the dangers of crocs . It said that they had taken measures to reduce the risk of crocodiles entering the area but obviously you went swimming at your own risk. Despite the National Parks best efforts a crafty croc could still sneak through so there was no way we were getting up close to the water here. The walk took us away from the water and up some steps to the top of the gorge where we got a great view of the Katherine River flowing through. The gorge looked gorgeous. We could see boats below hauling the tourists along the river towards where the crocodiles were. The crocs probably watched them coming and one of them would have said something like 'Hey lads, look out the canapes are coming. Get ya smackers around 'em'. We also saw some people kayaking down the river. Bit risky that with crocs about we thought, but people are stupid! The walk was only for a couple of kilometres but it was mad hot and we were glad to get back to the camper and some air con. We had thought of staying at the campsite at the National Park but we didn't like the look of the people on it. We decided instead to go to Shady Lane Caravan Park that we'd seen earlier on the road across to the gorge. It was a good choice. It was indeed a shady site set amongst loads of tropical trees. We spent the rest of the day sat in the shade and cooling in front of our fan.
