Happiness Is The Road
We had a lovely quiet night and both felt refreshed and ready to motor today. After brekky we hit the highway to the border with the Northern Territory which was about 20 kilometres away. We were met with a big sign at the border which proclaimed ’Welcome to Nature Territory, the Northern Territory of Australia’. We were both very happy to be in the Territory as although we had been to some wonderful places in Queensland it just hadn’t lived up to expectations. For me this was also the last State/Territory for me to visit as after the Territory it is back into Western Australia. Just after the border the road signs indicated that the speed limit was a very fast 130kph (80.77 mph). The highest speed limit we had seen before this was 110kph. We motored along at our usual and much more sensible 90-100kph. Just over the border the dirt seemed to become even redder and the scenery seemed to become more barren and desolate. The sky seemed bigger, the distances were bigger, the road trains seemed bigger. This is a big big country. We saw lots of cattle close by the road and we also saw a dingo running near to the road. We slowed down and got some good photos of him. Apart from a short break for lunch we didn’t stop today until we got to the Barkly Homestead Roadhouse. We had covered over 300 kilometres and were shattered. It was about 2pm but we decided to call it a day as the next roadhouse was a lot further on. This little roadhouse was the first settlement we had come across since crossing the border. The next roadhouse from here was nearly 200 kilometres away and the first town we would come across in the Territory, Tennant Creek, about 250 kilometres away. Most of the roadhouses here have caravan parks and we got a spot to stay the night behind the roadhouse. We just chilled the rest of the day away. We went to bed early as we have another long drive tomorrow.
