Happiness Is The Road
It had been another cold night. After brekky it was time to hit the highway again. We had about 200 kilometres to cover back to 'The Alice'. After all the quiet roads and desolate scenery it was a shock to be back in a big town and have to deal with things like traffic lights! We went to find a garage first of all to service the camper as it was due another 5000 kilometre service. The one recommended to us by Travellers Autobarn was really busy and they couldn't fit us in but they suggested we try another place just down the road. The lady on reception there had customer service skills that left a lot to be desired. She was a bit of a rottweiler and she would have been better employed as a doctors surgery receptionist! She barked at us 'What do you want? whilst frowning at us. I very nicely asked if they could fit us in for a basic service. She responded by saying 'You can't expect to walk in and expect us to fit you in immediately' We acknowledged this having not expected to get it done today anyhow. She then flicked through the diary and then nearly floored us both by saying she could do it this afternoon!! It had already passed noon. With mouths agog and a little confused we nodded at her that that would be great. Then I dared to commit the cardinal sin by asking how much a basic service would cost, just a new filter and oil change. At this point she went red in the face and nearly blew a gasket!!! Then whilst tapping her head with her finger she said 'I don't keep the prices of every cars filter and oil in my head'. So then Jay told her that as we were on a budget we needed a price. To this she threw a strop, particularly as I asked again about how much it would cost, and in an exasperated state she said she'd ask the boss. The boss came out straight away, asked what the vehicle was and without hesitation said 'It'll be $115 and can you bring it in at 8 in the morning' The rottweiler stayed in her kennel and we didn't see her again! Some people are just not suited to customer facing jobs! We left happy. We were running low on food so we then went to Woolies and stocked up. Also we hardly had any beer left. As it was after 2pm we were able to go to the bottle shop and we got a carton of Coopers. With this done we went to find a caravan park. We decided to try a different one from last time and so we drove to the absolutely wonderfully named G'day Mate Tourist Park. Whilst I was waiting in reception I heard the receptionist on the phone telling someone that they were fully booked for a few days. It looked like we may have to try somewhere else but they did have powered sites available tonight. I asked why they were so busy and I was told that they were fully booked from tomorrow for a few days as the Fink Desert Race was taking place just outside Alice. It's an off road multi terrain two day race for bikes, cars, buggies and quads. We had noticed on the way into Alice that there had been loads of cars towing trailers with bikes on. We wondered why so many bikes and it all made sense now. We were only staying in Alice one night so the lack of camp sites wouldn't affect us. Our timing had been perfect. We got a great spot amongst palm trees and we chilled with a nice Coopers beer. By dark the temperature had massively dropped. It had been about 25 during the day but by bedtime it was probably about 5. This was the coldest night so far and was a triple duvet and socks night!
