Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we headed out of Murchison. It was another gorgeous day. About twenty kilometres from Murchison we stopped at the Buller Gorge Swingbridge. At 110 metres long it is the longest swingbridge in New Zealand. It spans the Buller River that we saw rippling past. We both made our way across with me feeling a little uneasy as I hate heights. It was fun though in a kind of scary way. Once across we went on the walking trails through the native bush. The walk trails started out alongside the river bank which is also the White's Creek fault line. This was the epicentre of the 1929 Murchison earthquake and we saw where the ground had instantaneously rose more than 4.5 metres. Eventually the trial took us away from the river and up through the trees to a lookout where we got an aerial view of the river and the swing bridge. From here we followed a trial to Ariki Falls back on the river through more unspoilt native forest. We sat at the falls, which were more like rapids, for a while and watched the water pounding through the narrow gap in the rocks. After this we followed the trail back through the forest, past some abandoned remnants of gold mining that was done in this area and back and over the scary swing bridge. We then hit the road heading west towards the coast along the usual twisting roads with the usual aggressive drivers. We went to a camp site in Westport about an hours drive away with a stop en route for lunch. We got a nice end spot with a view of goats in the field behind us. We simply chilled out for the rest of the day.
