Happiness Is The Road
We decided to stay another night at Murchison. The camp site was good and we liked the camp site dog, a really cute black Scottie with the whitest teeth we have ever seen. After brekky we drove just a short distance down the road to the Matakitaki Scenic Reserve to go on the Skyline Track. It was a fairly steep path that started in some woodland by the car park. We followed the path as it wound it's way through the trees until we emerged just under two kilometres later into bright sunlight on the top of the hill. The weather was absolutely glorious today. There was a blue sky and the sun was pelting down on us. We went to the lookout and were rewarded with a magnificent view of the hills, the town and the very blue Buller River that was winding it's way through the valley. Whilst we were sat there sunning ourselves we were joined by a very friendly Australian guy who we chatted to for a while. We talked about how badly the Kiwis drive and how much we had enjoyed our travels around Australia. He told us that he hadn't toured much of his own country. We told him that we couldn't understand why he was wasting his time in New Zealand when the vast majority of Australia is so much better than here. After a while we walked a little bit further along to another lookout and then we made our way back down. We then drove to the river, had some lunch and then went for another walk. We followed a path through some trees and along the river. We also learnt some facts about the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Murchison in 1929. After this we went back to the camp site and chilled out. Whilst we were having our tea sat outside on the piiiiiiiiiicniiiiiiiiiiic taaaaaaaaaaaable we were joined by some really funny black ducks. They sat with us for ages. Two of them had a nap and three of them left us a 'little gift' on the grass before they upquacked and dumped us in pursuit of some girl ducks who were fluttering their wings nearby. The day had started cloudy but had ended beautifully sunny.
