Happiness Is The Road
Day 7 on our advent calendar was a cute pair of blue mittens. We awoke to a gorgeous day and to a gorgeous view. The sky was a clear blue with not a single cloud in sight. After brekky we went for a walk along the estuary beach and round to the ocean hoping to see another sea lion. The beach was beautiful in the morning light and we had a really lovely walk. As we got to the ocean we saw a big sea lion in the distance who was playing on the sand near the crashing waves. We saw him running along and then flinging himself down onto the wet sand and sliding along on his belly! He did this over and over quite a few times and it was hilarious to watch. Unfortunately by the time we got closer he had finished playing and he had disappeared into the water. Once back at the camper van we hit the road. As we were driving through Owaka we couldn't help but notice an incredible amount of teapots in somebody's garden. We had stumbled across Teapot Land. It was a quirky and really quite beautiful collection of teapots that the owner had collected and assembled together in a riotously good way. A lot of love and dedication must have gone into creating this masterpiece. There were small and large teapots of every shape and colour imaginable along with a hilarious group of dressed mannequins who were overlooking this spectacle. Our favourite teapots were the sheep and the red bus. From here we headed towards Dunedin with the road hugging the coastline for some of the journey. We stopped along the way for lunch with a sea view and then carried on to Dunedin. We had been intending on stopping the night in Dunedin but in the end we just drove around the city centre and then drove out the other side. It was just a busy city and we didn't really get a good vibe. Instead we decided to carry on up the coast to a place called Moeraki that is famous for it's boulders. There were two camp sites here. We didn't like the first one very much as it was basically just a big open field and when we pulled in we were stared at by a filthy looking girl with dirty dreadlocks who was sat at a piiiiiiicniiiiiiiiiiiiic taaaaaaaaable! She put us right off so we drove to the other site a bit further up the road. This one appeared to be marginally better. We got a spot with a sea view but not the one that we originally wanted due to the power box containing a birds nest which was full of gorgeous little blue eggs! We went for a walk to the cute little beach which had really lovely golden sand and then we relaxed for the rest of the day and people watched. The place was full of strange characters and seemed to provide 'care in the community'! A camper van not too far away from us had two blokes and a dog living in it and they were most definitely two scotch eggs short of a picnic! We ended up calling them 'Alf & Son' after our dear neighbour at the apartment in Perth. They wandered aimlessly around the place hollering at each other and the dog was left to it's own devices. We saw it taking a dump on one of the sites not far from us. Nice!!! We both made a mental note to avoid this route when going to the amenities and also to look out for other potential deliveries of doggy doo on the way. Later on the piiiiiiiicniiiiiiiiiic taaaaaaables outside the camp kitchen were taken over by some sort of 'mothers meeting' of dodgy looking local characters who had earlier all screeched down the hill next to the camp site in their utes in typical aggressive Kiwi style! We looked out at this spectacle until bedtime and tried to remain positive!
