Happiness Is The Road
We discovered a teddy bear with a christmas hat on day 5 of our advent calendar. We had a relatively peaceful night until about half six when Alf & son emerged and started hollering at each other. The dog was still loose and no doubt had done it's early morning **** on the grass somewhere. We trod very carefully on our trips to the amenities! After brekky we got away from this catastrophe of a place and hit the road. We drove the short distance to the Moeraki Boulders which are found along a stretch of Koekohe Beach. We went for a walk along the sand and saw all the boulders ahead of us, some solitary and some clustered together. They were pretty remarkable and an interesting and quite intriguing sight. Some of them looked like turtles lying on the beach. These spherical boulders did not come from bedrock the way boulders normally do. They are actually concretions. They have been exposed by erosion of sedimentary rocks laid down from 65 to 13 million years ago. They were formed by the gradual precipitation of calcite in mudstone over 4 million years ago. We walked amongst them for a while and got some great photos before returning to the camper van. We had a look at some gorgeous alpacas that were in a field next to the car park and then we took the road north to Oamaru where we stopped at a New World to do some food shopping. It is extremely difficult to buy real food in this country. Virtually everything in the supermarkets here are processed and jam packed with sugar, vegetable oil, artificial sweeteners and other chemical and poisonous carcinogenic additives. In order to get some gluten, sugar and rancid oil free bread, sugar and chemical additive free beans and a few other healthy things we ended up having to go to five supermarkets! Therefore most of our day was taken up trying to buy real food. We went to two New Worlds in Oamaru, a Pak N Save and a New World in Timaru and a Freshchoice in Geraldine before we managed to get everything! After this food shopping bonanza we were both absolutely knackered and decided to stay at the camp site in Geraldine. It was a nice place with good facilities and we relaxed here for the rest of the day.
