Happiness Is The Road
We had a very peaceful night all on our own. We found a bird under the day 3 window of our advent calendar. After brekky we drove the short distance to McLean Falls. The trail to the falls took us up through the rainforest until we could hear the water gushing down. The falls are described as the best in the area and they were pretty spectacular. We watched the water tumbling over and descending some steep drop offs and terraces and as we were early there was no one else about which was brilliant. After a while we made our way back to the car park and passed loads of people on the way up to the falls. We had timed this perfectly. After this we drove further along to Papatowai to go and see The Lost Gypsy Gallery. Gary at the Invercargill camp site had told us that it was quirky and a must see. We really like quirky and were looking forward to coming here. It was a weird and wonderful place and massively quirky. There was an old bus and inside it was jam packed with little inventions and contraptions that the owner, Blair who is like a mad scientist, has made. He has a fantastic eye and imagination for things. His ingenuity and creativity is incredible. The amazing myriad of stuff is all made from junk and scrap and everywhere we looked there was hilarious and mind boggling stuff. It was like stepping back in time and we loved it. We paid a few dollars each to have a look around the 'Theatre of Sorts' which was situated behind the bus. Here we found a phenomenal variety of extremely quirky automated gadgets that we had loads of fun playing with. It was astonishing and it really put a big smile on our faces. The man is an absolute genius. From here we made our way to Owaka and down to the coast to find the camp site we had chosen for tonight. It was a good choice as we got a wonderful private spot with an incredible view looking over an estuary to the ocean with it's waves pounding ashore. The weather was hot and sunny and we chilled out for a while whilst admiring the view. We were very happy to spot a gorgeous sea lion basking himself on the beach not too far away. Later on we went for a walk through the coastal dunes and around to the ocean hoping to see more sea lions. Unfortunately we didn't see any more but it was a lovely walk under the blazing sun and brilliant blue sky. When we got back to the camp site we sat and relaxed in the sun enjoying the fantastic view. We were treated later on to a beautiful sun set as the sun turned the most glorious shades of orange before disappearing over the horizon for another day.
