Happiness Is The Road
We awoke to a gorgeous view of the mountains. Jay was feeling much better today. After brekky we drove a few kilometres down the road to Lake Matheson which is famous for it's mirror views of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. We set off on the walking trial around the lake which is nestled amongst ancient forest. The lake was formed about 14,000 years ago when the Fox Glacier retreated from it's last major advance towards the sea and left a depression that later filled with water. The walk began by crossing a small suspension bridge before winding through the forest to the lake which is a lovely deep blue. At the far end of the lake we saw the signpost to the view of views and climbed the steps to reach it. The mountains were crystal clear and almost cloud free this morning but unfortunately the snow capped peaks were now shrouded in the white fluffy stuff. The view though was still pretty damn good. From here we continued along the path to Reflection Island, covered in native foliage, where on a good day the mountains are reflected in the still water of the lake. Although there were no mountains shimmering in the water the reflection of the clouds was good enough for us. With no one else here it was a beautifully tranquil and calm place to spend a few moments. Once we'd done the full circle of the lake we mooched around the gift shop before heading over to the Fox Glacier again. As Jay had missed out yesterday she was very keen to see this spectacular glacier and I was more than happy to see it again. The walk up to the terminal face of the glacier was so much better today with Jay at my side. The weather was fantastic and soon we were both admiring this beautiful hunk of ice with it's shades of blue and it's dramatic pinnacles, ridges and canyons. It's an incredibly amazing sight to behold. Once back at the camper van we made our way back to the camp site where we chilled out for the rest of the day. Before dark we listened to music and watched the clouds moving across the mountains. The scene before us was constantly changing with the snowy peaks disappearing and then reappearing again. As the sun went down the peaks were cast with a beautiful golden glow. It had been a wonderful day. Fox's Glacier sure is mint!
