Happiness Is The Road
We awoke to a gorgeous sunny day. The snow capped mountains that had been taken from us by cloud cover yesterday were back and looking quite stunning under the morning glow of sunlight. Franz Josef is in a really beautiful location. After brekky we hit the road for the twenty kilometre journey south to the Fox Glacier. The access road was through rainforest until the road went over a manmade rock causeway to the parking area. Unfortunately Jay was feeling very poorly sick today and wasn't feeling well enough to do the walk. She insisted though that I go on my own and report back with the photographs. So whilst Jay waited in the camper van I followed the trail to the terminal face of the glacier. The path followed the side of the valley where low cloud hugged the steep sides and past an area where there had been a recent rock slide. The trail then went over a flowing stream, up a very steep hill and to a viewing area for an incredible view of this big hunk of ice. This glacier was far more impressive than the Franz Josef mainly because you were able to get so much closer to it. All the detail could be seen including the lovely blue ice, it's jagged pinnacles of ice of and it's numerous canyons and crevices. It was an awe inspiring sight. The glacier is thirteen kilometres long and is still advancing. After taking in this awesome sight for a while I walked down to another lookout for a lower down view of the ice. From here I could see an ice covered cave, out of which flowed the Fox River. Around the cave entrance the river was littered with big chunks of ice that had collapsed off the terminal face. After this I made my way back to Jay loaded with photographs to show her. With Jay still not feeling too good we went to find the camp site in Fox Glacier Village. We got an end spot with a view of the mountains and we relaxed in the sun for the afternoon. By tea time Jay was feeling much better. Later on we sat and watched the gorgeous view until the setting sun cast a warming glow over the mountain tops and disappeared until morning.
