Happiness Is The Road
This had been our last night in Victoria. We were crossing the border into a new State today. We decided to have breakfast on the road this morning. We drove just a short way down the road to where there was a nature walk and ate there. We then went on the nature walk through the woods with wonderful big trees. We had been told that we may see koalas here but we didn't. We did however see a really funny bird strutting through the undergrowth. Back in the camper we hit the road. As it is a public holiday weekend in Australia for Labour Day we decided to get away from the coast where it would be really busy and head inland. We had chosen a town called Bombala and we hoped that it was going to be nice. The countryside around Mallacoota is really green and lush and is the most British looking countryside that I have seen on this trip so far. Most of Australia is yellow because of the heat and dry weather. Not long after getting back on the main highway we crossed the border into New South Wales. We are now only 528 kilometres from Sydney. We drove into Eden and went food shopping and then we drove inland about 70 kilometres to Bombala. The scenery on the way was great. We passed through lots of lush woodland with great winding roads and on to very open farming countryside before getting to Bombala which we did find to be a lovely little town. We found the camp site which was on the banks of the River Bombala. It was a lovely quiet council run camp site and was fairly cheap too. We were checked in by the caretaker, Dale. He was a really nice guy and we got a lovely site close to the amenities and overlooking the river. This area is known as Platypus Country and Dale told us that from the bridge we might see the platypus. We settled in and then went for a walk round. We walked through the park and then down the river. This town could almost have been in Britain. The grass and trees here were very green. The grass was very long and unlike anywhere else I've seen in Australia. We crossed over the river and walked back along the other side. We then had a mooch around the town. It was a Saturday night at about 6pm and the place was dead. There was nobody about. Everywhere was shut apart from the pub. It's how I imagine Britain was like back in the 60's. On the way back to the camp site we passed by the main bridge and went to look for the platypus. We saw their nest under the bridge but couldn't see anyone at home. We looked down the river and saw some ripples in the water. We briefly saw the beak and the tail of the platypus as it moved in the water but unfortunately we didn't get a proper look. We then wandered back to our lovely little camper home and had a lovely tea with a river view.
