No. More. Early. Flights. It's a mantra that we try to live by. A bit like "Never, Ever Pay Retail". We manage the latter much better than the former. By early we mean 8.45 am for a domestic trip from Timisoara to Bucharest (only 1 hr 15 in a prop plane). But we know that on Romanian flights if the check in cut off is 45 minutes prior... then 80% of passengers will turn up at the 55 minutes prior point and security becomes a scrum. We are all in favour of avoiding drama and missed flights, so we were up at 5.45 am, in a cab by 6.45 am and waiting for our flight (almost alone) by 7.30 am. Time to chat and read. The flight was 100% on time and we were at the baggage conveyer at 10 am... the bags seemed to have taken a detour somewhere between the plane and the belt - they didn't arrive until 10.25 am. There were emergency vehicles playing silly-fools on the runway which might explain it. In any event, the airport hotel lays on a free shuttle and our man with a sign (bless... we love having a sign at the airport) was waiting patiently for us and we were here in no time - checked in at 10.30 am - So there's a plug for the Angelo Hotel by Vienna House at Bucharest Airport, Romania. Our six week Romanian odyssey has been 99% Air BnB which has run the gamut from five star to 'what's a star', so for us, the four stars here have been very, very welcome. The buffet breakfast doesn't start until 5 am - so we are even OK to have breakfast in the room and have just now returned from a burger in the downstairs restaurant and having fun ticking all the boxes on the brekkie menu. Today has been essentially a rest day. Tomorrow will be 100% travel day - 7.15 am flight (see... we are useless on the first mantra), from Bucharest to Stockholm with old reliable 'Blue Air', then collect bags and recheck for our first ever flight on Icelandair to, you guessed it, Reykjavik, Iceland. We should be touching down in the Land of the Wavy Green Lights in the Sky (and hot pools and diamond beaches and glaciers) by 3.45 pm Saturday. Bring on Travel Day!
