Life just lately has resembled a Formula 1 Grand Prix motor race. We just not sure if we're the speeding cars or the spectators. We had a huge night's sleep on the ferry on Friday night and took our time over breakfast while sitting in port in Helsinki. We'd hoped to avoid the immigration crowds coming in to Finland, but no such luck. As an exterior border of the Schengen zone and many, many Russians on board the ferry, it probably took another hour. We finally emerged from the terminal to find no taxis. Jumped on a tram heading in the right direction instead and then walked from the city centre to our hotel (doesn't matter how tired you are - blue sky and sunshine in Helsinki is as good excuse as any for walking). Helsinki, we are sure, has many wondrous things to see - we just probably won't. It really has been scheduled for a post-trip chill out - Saturday was just a jolly good rest once we reached the hotel, Sunday we had breakfast and emerged from our hobbit hole at midday for a free walking tour. Just us and 50 other people - which is just too big for a good tour. For the first time we skived off 45 minutes before the end of the tour - we'd had enough fun and enjoyed reaching the market square. We've sourced our postcards and badge and took a stroll through one of the world's most beautiful railway stations, right here in central Helsinki. We toured the main Lutheran cathedral here in town (very restrained - no unnecessary fripperies there) and tried (and failed) to take a look in the Russian Orthodox Cathedral (which has unorthodox and unpredictable opening hours. We learned how Helsinki survived WWII relatively unscathed. They were sneaky. They used to turn all the lights off in the city during bombing raids and light up uninhabited islands with big fires - ensuring most bombs went harmlessly into the water. We've located with 100% certainty where the Finnair Airport bus leaves from, just over the road, for our return trip to the airport late on Tuesday afternoon. Monday was packing day... which actually proved to be a bigger job than either of us planned for. We are flying out of a northern European Spring - warm day is 6 degrees or so. Having said that it's 12 today (a heatwave). We'll be flying into Brisbane and then Sydney with highs around 27 degrees and humid (an Australian Autumn). A complete repack with summer clothes out and Ugg boots away was 100% necessary. So that is us - just a few photos of our very relaxed stay in Helsinki... Farewell Europe - we'll see you later this year
