First off it's not Siggy-sore-rah! Though given the rock hard nature of the teeny-tiny double bed (go on - measure 140 cm across your current bed... not much is it), after Siggy, we are sorer than we have ever been. Also nothing to do with Dino-saur(a). In fact, and it's certainly an interesting Latin based language, it's Siggy-Shwa-ra. We only say, because we've had to learn the "shhhh" sound here, otherwise people just look at us like we have two heads. Well we arrived in 'the most beautiful town in Romania' 4 nights ago and to be honest, and it's probably because it's winter, it really wasn't that flash. Not as beautiful and lively as Sibiu, nothing in particular to go and see (like the castles outside of Brasov), nothing on in the way of culture - heck, barely anything on in the way of shops open. So one night would probably have been enough. Four was more than enough. We stayed at a little B&B (not even an Air BnB apartment - an actual B&B) just across the road from the train station, and that was super convenient when we got off the trai from Sibiu. Crossed the road and checked in. Then we went to explore the medieval citadel. For the first time in Romania we were hit with the 'high place of sacrifice' tax. We chose our B&B based on how close it was to the station (and how low the price was). We had not taken into account that the station and the lower town were both significantly 'lower' than the medieval citadel on the really big hill. Just like you should always be aware that hikes to the high place of sacrifice rarely involve low or medium sized destinations. Probably lucky we didn't spend more and stay up there. Food prices (for those restaurants that were open) were also sky high. We saw all the sights on our first day in town, then saw them again in depth on our second day in town. On our third day, it snowed (woo hoo - opportunity to take photos of said sights under snow... waaay groovy). Fourth day in town? Hit the road (well the train lines) for the 4 hour train to Cluj. Funny story... in a country that we've been happy to discover hasn't actually been out to scam, rort or con us, we actually managed to scam ourselves into paying for a really nice lunch. How so you might say? Well. We were wandering through the citadel on Saturday and James was talking - and this old geezer comes up and says 'Australian!' and we say Yes! His daughter is married to an Aussie guy and lived in Darwin for the last 10 years. Well that was nice. Anyway we were walking on Sunday and church had just come out - there's our new best friend and his wife coming from church... chit chat, chit chat... bye bye. Then 30 minutes later we're just wandering about the citadel and he's heading into his house and makes us come in. Then we chit and chat some more... Then he invites us to come for a wine on Sunday evening - Come! Have a little wine! So we did and polished off a bottle of fruity little paint stripper made from last summer's grapes from his back yard. So we're all getting along like a house on fire. Sunday evening he and the missus invite us to come for lunch on Monday. Wow. What hospitable people. And sooooo friendly! Anyway - lunch was positively delicious - pumpkin soup to die for, paprikas chicken with mamaliga (polenta) and some veges, desert, coffee and constantly plying us with homemade wine and brandy... On a positive note we weren't trafficked into the white slave trade by a couple in their 70s (... and they seemed like such nice people, the neighbours would have said) However the friendliness was definitely wearing off after lunch... Hmmm - was it something we said? No... actually they hit us up on the way out the door for some money for the food. We coughed up - but probably not what they were hoping for (should stick a menu on the door and be done with it) Shan't let it dampen our high opinion of this country and its people - but it certainly seemed a strange situation at the time. Sighisoara is apparently considered one of the many (if not 'the') must see places in Romania, but from my point of view at least, you really mustn't. Tuesday now and we're off to the north - Cluj Napoca - Capital of Transylvania, second largest city in Romania and as old as the hills. History City here we come!
