Today was once again very hot in Penang but I decided to make the most of it.
In the morning I walked into the old town and stumbled across these amazing markets called Campbell Mall Markets; basically most of the market was finishing up as it was approaching midday but there were a bunch of stalls still open selling preserved pickled fruits.
I was given a run down of the technique for preserving the various fruits which involved ailing the fruit in salt, then in vinegar, once again in salt and then in water and sugar/honey and some with spices - the result was a somewhat sour-sweet fruit, quiet interesting and tasty enough but I dear say you would have stomach troubles if you tried to eat too much of it!
On the way back I decided to walk the high road alongside the base of the mountains which gave some spectacular views but was right in the open heat of the day.
I started to think of my next adventure today which will be in the middle of March. One thing is for sure I won't be staying in places like Thailand when it was clear from the beginning the place was not what I was looking for and authenticity was long gone.
I need more of a challenge with my travels now, a language to learn, a trail to walk, a new way of volunteering and working.
The last 2 months were necessary because I had to be home for my sisters wedding but well planned they were not!
America has a strong appeal to me at the moment and even if my roadtrip mate Darcy falls through I think come the middle of the year that is where I will be.
Tonight I say goodbye to the Kang family and hello to my new host Cath.
Myself and the Kang family went to a small little Chinese resteraunt and had our last meal together, they also asked if I could write in their little visitor book and they took a Polaroid pic to stock in there aswell.
Cath picked me up at about 9:30pm and straight away we headed to Butti Fingi the swimming part of the island and touristic side. We had a walk around the markets, stopped for a drink and then headed back into Georgetown for Cath to get some dinner. By this time it was 12:30am and we had to go pick Caths Mum up who had been out for a few drinks with friends.
Both Cath and her Mother are wonderful and I feel very comfortable with them already. I found out about the wedding celebrations and the crazy weekend ahead and then went to bed.
